this is really good. pretty flat looking though, basically no head from the tap. obsidian luster though, real shiny and neat looking despite being still. the nose is heavy whiskey barrel. less vanilla and more char and oak than others, allowing the rich malt base to come though quite well. my two criticisms are that the alcohol is way more prominent than it should be in a beer under 10% abv, and with so much body on it. it just shouldnt be so exposed, but it is. the other is that there is a lot of residual sugar on this, which isnt all that nice as it warms. i usually like these to sit and warm up, open up, but the brown sugar sweetness to this one isnt my favorite. caramel in the malt along with the roast, rich and layered in that way. fun beer, well made, but a short pour for me please. not close to as good as bligh's, but im glad they have a little series going.
