22 oz. Bomber

Pours a very nice cloudy brown color, very nice carbonation, with a nice small creamy off-white head, with some sticky lacing left behind. The nose is malty, with a pretty good dose of whiskey, sweet, nutty, coffee. The taste is malty, sweet, pretty big whiskey note, nutty like, coffee. Full body, ABV could be hidden better. Overall, a tasty brew.

More dark brown than black. Tan colored head that is easily swirled back to life. Beer almost has legs.

I smell booze, hazelnut, whiskey. Flavor is sweet, some nuttiness, a little fruity. Some coffee taste in the finish.

Despite all the things that are going on in this beer it is well balanced. It is a little cloying but otherwise very enjoyable.

Really terrific barrel-aged porter. Smooth mouthfeel and a wonderful balance of chocolate, hazelnut, and a bit of coffee. Probably the best of the signature series I've had from Dry Dock.

Huge chewy body, just enough sweetness to balance the coffee. Hazelnut isn't overdone or synthetic. The barrel is nice but not a huge presence. Really, I love this and am impressed. It is so thick and smooth, it reminds me of Southern Tier's big sweet stouts except it is much more palatable due to not being overly sweet. Very nice overall.

BOTTLE: 1 pint 6 fl oz format. Brown glass. Ornate gold label. Gold foil-ed over pry-off crown cap. 2016 vintage.

"Aged in Colorado whiskey barrels for 8 months." 10.5% ABV.

HEAD: Fizzles out within 10 seconds leaving no time to note its characteristics, but I think it was khaki? Leaves no lacing or legs on the sides of my Guinness goblet.

BODY: Opaque black. No yeast/lees are visible within.

Looks average for an imperial porter (barrel aged or not). Not unique or special, but generally appealing.

AROMA: Some vague fruit. Coffee acidity. Dark malts. Chocolate malt sweetness. Hazelnut isn't overt - at least not in a Nutella sense of the flavour/aroma.

The fruitiness of it is interesting and plays well with the chocolate malt, but I'm missing the vivid expressive coffee character you'd expect in a world class coffee (imperial) porter.

I get none of the whiskey barrel character - no whiskey, no vanilla, no spiciness, no oak.

Aroma is a bit reticent for the style, suggesting a shallow beer. Nevertheless, it seems to boast adequate complexity.

TASTE: Fruity indeed, hitting on notes of berries/currants - I suppose blueberry?

A shallow inexpressive dark malt and chocolate malt backbone gives this sweetness to counter its bitter notes of burnt sugars and coffee roast. There's no coffee flavour though - just acidity and coffee ground bitterness/hints of roast. No roasted barley is present to accent the coffee. Some fudge-like chocolatey sweetness.

Whiskey barrel character is also reticent; so much for 8 months of aging. No vanilla, no oak, no whisk(e)y spice, no coconut.

Hazelnut isn't overt, but I find it when I look for it. Those hoping for a nutella porter will be let down.

Actually, those looking for a good porter will be let down. The barrel character is practically nonexistent, making it a subpar "barrel aged" imperial porter. The increased malts don't make the malt backbone any more interesting or robust, making it a subpar "imperial" porter. And the absence of balanced chocolate flavours mixed with roast/bitter flavours make it a subpar porter. As shallow as they come, and surprisingly simply executed considering all the adjuncts and barrel aging they put the base beer through.

Faintly flavoured, with a dreadfully brief flavour duration. Average flavour intensity.

TEXTURE: Thick, full-bodied, well-carbonated, slightly warm, a bit gooey, a bit syrupy, smooth, wet. Not oily, gushed, harsh, boozy, or astringent. A softer sleeker body with a more luscious creamy silky feel would be better.

OVERALL: The shallow barrel notes, reticent malt backbone, and overall simplicity make this a huge disappointment coming from the brewery behind Bligh's Barleywine. The barrel wasn't well selected in terms of accentuating flavours from the base beer, and the coffee/hazelnut adjuncts just lack basic expressiveness and vividness. It's a sipper of a brew without much flavour, and I'd caution others from picking up a bottle, but the subtle fruitiness of it (possibly from the coffee?) is an interesting element.
