Peppermint porter. Served on-draught into a pils glass @ Dry Dock Brewing (South Dock) in Winter 2014. Reviewed from notes.
5% ABV. 25 IBU. $6 USD.
No bubble show forms as it's poured.
HEAD: Half a finger in height. White colour. Creamy. Decent thickness. Nice retention (~3-4 minutes). No lacing clings to the sides of the glass as the head recedes. Soft.
BODY: Dark peppy brown with red hues. Not the opaque black I expected given its billing as a porter. No yeast/lees are visible within.
Appears well-carbonated. It's interesting for a porter - certainly atypical - but it does fit the Winter ale category.
AROMA: Peppermint jumps out - cool, fresh, herbal. Junior mints come to mind given the simultaneous presence of mint, caramel, and chocolate. Hints of marshmallow. Tingly, a biy gooey, peppermint leaf evocative.
It's a neat almost unique aroma. I've had peppermint beers before but few suggested junior mints as strongly as this one does. I find it fascinating and intriguing. Moderate aromatic intensity.
No overt yeasty or hoppy aromatics are detectable, nor is any over alcohol.
TASTE: Peppermint is present, distinct, and genuine, evoking cool herbal peppermint leaves (not some artificial peppermint flavouring or the like). Chocolate, tingly lightly narcotic notes, caramel, pleasant malt sweetness.
Well-balanced, with nice depth of flavour. Average flavour duration and intensity. Well-built, delivering on the premise of the beer. I quite like it, and it stands out amongst the rest of the beers in Dry Dock's lineup. Well-executed, cohesive, almost unique.
TEXTURE: Smooth, coating, wet, fantastically creamy, of ideal thickness, delightfully soft. Aptly medium-bodied. Cool and refreshing (nailing the mint vibe they're after).
Complements the taste rather well. Perfectly carbonated. Great execution.
Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, or scratchy.
OVERALL: Highly drinkable. Avoids the pitfalls implicit in the premise: it's not cloying, it's not a mess, the peppermint isn't artificial or overbearing....it's just a highly enjoyable niche herbed porter with a fantastically nuanced flavour profile. I'd buy this by the six pack; it's solid work from Dry Dock. Tasty, and well worth trying if it comes back around on-draught.
