Reviewed from notes taken at South Dock in Winter 2014.
On-draught into a pilsner glass. Cost was $6.00 USD.
25 IBU. 5.80% ABV. Winter seasonal.
HEAD: 1.5 fingers worth of fairly dull mocha colour head. Nicely creamy, with good thickness and a foamy even consistency. Lacing sticks to the sides of the glass as it recedes, which takes a good ~5 minutes.
BODY: Opaque solid dark ruby. No yeast/lees are visible within.
Appears well-carbonated. Not unique or special looking for the style, but it does depart from the usual opaque jet black of a stout.
AROMA: Caramel, cream, some roastiness, muted chocolate, dark malt sweetness, chocolate malt sweetness, amber malts, and, yes, a nutty note I suppose I'd associate with chestnut (but I doubt I'd peg it for chestnut in a blind tasting). Not too sweet, but I do wish it were more roasty and chestnut-evocative.
No overt yeasty notes are detectable, nor are any off-notes or overt booze.
Appealing, but a bit timid and light.
TASTE: The nuttiness is lovely alongside the chocolate malt, but I highly doubt many would recognize the nutty flavour as chestnut in a blind tasting. Cream, dark malts, chocolate malts, toastiness, brown malts. Well balanced, if a bit overt.
Above average depth of flavour. Nice flavour duration. Average flavour intensity.
I like it, but it's far from intricate or subtle in its execution. Very straightforward no-frills fare.
The chestnut helps lend it nuance. I wish the cocoa nibs were more present.
TEXTURE: Creamy, soft, smooth, wet, full-bodied, and of apt thickness. This mouthfeel suits the taste well, but fails to elevate the beer as a whole by accentuating specific flavours. Well-carbonated.
OVERALL: Very drinkable. It's a nuanced creative stout with an intriguing chestnut element to it that could be better more expressively explored. Well worth trying, but not a paragon of the style.
I'd definitely get it again, but it's far from world class. Exactly the kind of beer a pilot system is meant for. The cocoa does emerge more as it comes to temperature, which is lovely. Nice execution of a great premise for a beer.
