this is back under the expanded moniker of play ball! apple pie ale, and it comes in at 5.6% abv. sort of a strange release for spring, as the flavors of this beer are much more suited to fall, it is nevertheless a very tasty and interesting brew. it pours a decadent burnt caramel rust color with a prominent two inches of off white head. the nose is cinnamon and English pale and red malts. very bold, takes me to October in upstate new york. the apples are green apple tart, and red apple juicy, a nice mix on the palate. the spice is positively cinnamon, but its not over the top ala winter warmer, mulled wine, thick as hell. its subtle, and the beer is actually very light for what it is. not desserty at all, as there is very little sweetness hanging around in the finish. lots of balance for a spiced beer too, with the tartness of the fruit and the cakey malt marrying well. excellent carbonation and a fuller body without being filling. long lasting aftertaste, a nice beer for a colder and rainy late spring day. memorably different, and of utmost quality.

I go to try this at the tap room last night. The ABV was not listed and I forgot to ask. The color was a nice yellow-orange. The smell was exactly like a McDonald's apple pie. The taste was also identical to apple pie. Very tasty beer but a full pint would be disgusting. I tried to enter this beer as a fruit beer but the site won't let me. WTF?
