Slightly hazy orange amber. Thick, sweet, and malty at first sip. Some of the dark wheat flavor, but it does taste just a little like a science experiment. Something seems to have fermented the malt in an unusual way. Yeasty bread pudding with hard sauce. It tastes more than a little like watered down cheap brandy. But somewhat bitter, which grows into the aftertaste. Quite alcoholic tasting. Rather peculiar fruity aroma, maybe a touch of cork and varnish.
Not exactly bad, and it's certainly strong swill, just murky in the flavors and a little much of the sweet and bitter combo. From a 22 oz bottle from Best Damn.

A- Reddish orange with off white head going towards tan
S- Sweet maltiness; Dark fruits, some tropical hop characters and a little bit of some funkiness
T- Balanced mix of grain and sweetness with a little hop bitterness. Get dark fruits and some of the yeast comes through with some banana flavors.
M- Medium body; Really creamy, smooth and easy to drink nice carbonation.
O- One of the best lagers I've had. Really flavorful and complex and easy to drink at 8.5%

A: The pour is a darkish amber color with a large off-white head. Seems a bit light if this is indeed a doppelbock.
S: A bit disappointing in terms of the intensity of the aromas. A bit of citrus and spice along with some toffee and caramel.
T: Quite a bit going on in terms of the flavor. Some fairly intense banana and orange flavors along with a powerful spice component, making this almost like a spiced cider. An intense sugary sweetness doesn't help that perception.
M: The body is on the lighter side with an intense but somewhat smooth carbonation. Again, interesting for a doppelbock.
D: I am still not entirely sure what to make of this beer. I liked certain aspects, but at times overwhelmingly sweet.

Draft at Pizza Port, Solana. Brown pour with a short tan head. Caramel and malt aroma, nothing special. Flavor was flat and weak, probably because there is nearly no carbonation. Some nice malt, caramel, and toffee, but very thin. Not a great doppelbock

Pint at Pizza Port Solana Beach for five dollars
Color is a deep amber that is almost with a 1/2 inch off white head that left some lacing but not much
Smell was toffee and caramel with a lot of sweet sugar and some darker fruits, raisins and plums
Taste was pretty good but could really taste the alcohol and it did not go very well with pizza, sweet and lots of malt, hops did not really hold up against the amount of sugar in this one, sweet all the way through with a sugary finish, could taste candy-like at times, taste does not stay around for long
Full body and a whole lot of carbonation, which was interesting for a dopplebock
Could drink much of this at all, could barely finish my pint, heavy and full of alcohol that does not hide well
First beer I have had from Lightning Brewery and it did not seem to impress me much, something new is always fun to try though

Note: I had this on cask... which is weird because it's a lager. Keep that in mind while reading the review.
Appearance: Medium to dark amber, but nothing like a usual doppelbock. What made this one special is the incredible amount of head and head retention this had for a cask ale. I've never seen anything like it.
Smell: This was pretty weak, smelling kinda like malt extract powder and a hint of piney hops.
Taste: Similar to the smell, but the hops were a little more intense, adding another dimension to the beer.
Mouthfeel: Very smooth do to the cask. There was no bitterness, like most doppelbocks, but it also was way lighter bodied than I'm used to for the style.
Drinkability: This was probably aided by the cask conditioning, but it diserves a 5. The alcohol did not seem present at all, and I could have easily gone through a few pints of this quickly if I didn't read about it before-hand. It's not what I'd expect from a normal doppelbock at all, and so I wouldn't go for it if that was what I wanted. However, if I wanted something kinda sweet, a little uninteresting, and easy to down, this is the beer I would choose.
