Brauerei Hans Knoblach

The Brauerei Knoblach in Schammelsdorf is a 14 minute car ride north east of Bamberg, is quite often part of a cycling tour, and also happens to still be within the greater Bamberg bus area (There are three buses from Bamberg that stop in Litzendorf: 970, 972 and 975. You need to get off the bus at the street "Am Knock" in Litzendorf. Start walking on Am Knock up the hill where it becomes Litzendorfer Strasse. Continue walking to the fork in the road and you should see the Brauerei on the right side within a few minutes). It has a beautiful beer garden with 24 large tables in the shade, and several smaller round and high-top tables with umbrellas. There are also 6 smaller tables in a covered area. It's very nice to relax there on a sunny day amongst hikers, cyclists, and families while listening to geese quacking, a rooster crowing, church bells ringing in the distance, and the rumblings of an occasional tractor driving by. Inside it's traditional, and perhaps a little dated, but the bathrooms are nice. The food is very good. There are 5 or 6 beers available including the Ungespundetes Lager, the very popular Räuschla Märzen, a Hefeweizen, a dunkles Landbier and a seasonal or two. Seasonals include Urmärzen ( February), Sommerbier (July to September), Bockbier (Oktober to December), Rauchbier (in winter), and Weihnachtsfestbier (from the beginning of December). I should note that they're closed on Sunday and Monday. This is one of my favorite stops outside of Bamberg.
