Zum Sternla Gasthaus

Visited Sternla for the first time on 30SEP21. Had never really heard of it before, to be honest.

Sternla is found on the ground floor of a multi-story, old-style building. Has a pink front with white trim. Enter the large, arched doorway on the right to a long hall, which has a few tables on the right. Near the rear left is the entrance to the Stube. Into there, and the service bar is on your right. Most large, polished, dark-wood tables are to the left, with a few straight ahead. It's a very comfy place, with dark paneling on the bottom walls, with white-washed plaster up top. The ceiling is old, worn, dark beams side to side. There was no music playing, just the sounds of many a happy reveler.

The staff was very friendly, and quite efficient, despite the place being packed! They had about 3 of their own Biers on tap, plus a few guest bottles. I had the Märzen, which was solid all around.
Nice, friendly, comfy place! Yet another option for Bamberg! Prosit!!

Popped in for a brew here. Pleasant appearance inside with light wood leaving the room feeling light and airy. Lots of room for people here. Pleasant atmosphere overall. House brews available limit the beer offerings. Reasonable service. Beer was quality and I did not try the food.

I was more interested in breweries than wirthauses during my recent trip to Bamberg so I didn't pay much attention to Zum Sternla. Ironically my room happened to be very close by, and I actually passed it on foot many times during my 4 days there. Finally on my last night I stopped in.

It's in a beautiful old building, but then again almost all of the buildings in Bamberg fit that bill. Inside it's pretty similar to other places in its decor, basic with lots of wood and a few hunting trophies and other things hung about. The bar is in the center with the smaller of two rooms in front of it on the street side, and the kitchen behind it, with a room behind that. As the weather was a little chilly and damp it was packed but my wife and I were still able to get beers fairly quickly and then stand waiting for a table to open up - that didn't happen. Of course we weren't waiting to eat, we'd just come from dinner, we just wanted some beers so it was cool. At some point someone noted that there was plenty of room outside. Hmmmm... OK. With our jackets on it wasn't bad, and we weren't the only other people out there, especially as the night went on and it got even more crowded. In fact, by the time we left it was full and I doubt we'd have been able to get a seat if we were just showing up. In the end I had a good time.

 

 

Zum Sternla is reported to be the oldest pub in Bamberg, operating since the year 1380 (though it was unclear to me if it had been a pub for the entire time). The front room is basically rectangular with the bar towards the back. Beyond the bar is a corridor leading to another room and a kitchen and rest rooms, as well as an exit to the small, outdoor seating area (bier garten). In addition, when you enter from the street, you actually enter a covered, outdoor seating area with four booths, and you must turn left to enter the main room. You may order beer in this outer area via a window to the bar. The interior of the main bar room has dark wood and light yellow stucco walls, and the tables are the typical scrubbed white pine.

They serve local Maisel beers: three on-tap (Pils, Kellerbier, and Hefeweizen) and three in bottles (Kristall Weisse, Hell, St. Michaelsberg Urtyp Dunkel); and also Schlenkerla Rauchbier in a bottle. The beer prices are typical for Bamberg (approx. 2 Euro for 0.5 L). The service is good, and friendly, and the young woman tending bar during my visit spoke English well. The customers that I saw were a mix of old and young. Food is offered, but I had no opportunity to try any -- maybe next time.

Nice, historic, old bar in the heart of town. Very near to the Ibis Hotel. Stop in for the historic value and have a Maisel.
