This is going to be my 8th type of Paulaner beer, and I was surprised that despite 3 years in Berlin + travelling regionally there, buying every single new local beer I saw, it isn't until now 8 years later that I noticed this one for sale on-line in the UK. Paulaner was my fav big/trad Bavarian brewery when there and I've higher expectations of this as a result.

Blind-tasted except for the beer's name, style and brewery/country, zero reviews below read (yet!)...
L- A first surprise is .... by default I imagined this would be a black lager, it's not! It is a lovely lustrous deep chestnut brown. Poured with a 2mm mid-tan head of absolutely micro bubbles. ps @+10mins, holds well.
S- Some nice toasty malts, but subtle so hard to divine more from it.
T- Toasty malts right from the start, a surprising prominent malty presence through the middle and light hops into the finish. Unexpected to be drinking a trad 'lager' that has some clear richness to it.
F- On my first 2-3 sips of this first beer of the day for me ie clean-palate I was thinking how unexpected this is. It reminds me far more of on English ale than a German lager! Perhaps it's a sub-style of lager brewed for winter when the palate yearns for more richness and depth?
O- All-in a big and pleasant surprise; I'm glad I bought this one. It might make a nice sessionable winter beer; esp over in Germany at their bargain local prices! They say that the best German wines aren't exported, the same seems to go for a lot of their more niche beer, even from big brewers like this one.
Review/scoring all done, now the reveal, I get to read the bottle lables to see what I missed! ===> There is some minor sediment remaining in the bottle but I didn't notice any entering the pour.
500ml bottle BB: 12/2021 £2.85 Bought from BeerMerchants, Kent/UK as part of a large pick-your own consignment to London.

The beer is listed on the Paulaner website pitched to Germany/In German. It translates as follows:
'It couldn't be more steeped in history. Neither is it nobler. Because until the 1930s there was no other beer at all for Bavaria. Despite the triumphant advance of the light, our dark is still a star today: mahogany brown, full-bodied sparkling, with spicy roasted aromas and an idea of dark chocolate. The very best barley malt and the heart of Munich pulsates under the mocha-colored, creamy head. Very loud.'
