Obtained from the UTOBEER beer stall in the Borough Market, London. Bottle-conditioned, 500ml brown bottle. BB Nov 2006. Served slightly chilled in a goblet.
A: opaque, jet-black colour, with a fast dissipating beige-hued fluffy beer head...
S: deep scent of roasted barley mixed well with touches of cinnamon, licorice, faintly star-anise, and a tinge of bitter herbs at the back. The malty base is equally underlined by a flow of refreshing, semi-sweet dark fruitiness, but overll the nose is dominated by dark malts and spice.
T: a very smooth flow of roasted malts and sweetish chocolatey flavour arrives at the palate upfront, gradually turning thicker along with a tinge of alcoholic warmth creeping down, while the mild mixed spices are well blended with the dark maltiness and provides a slightly spicy background to the overall malty flavour. Relatively clean finish with subtly nutty and a little bit dryish aftertaste in the end.
M: ultra-smooth on the mouthfeel for a 7.0%abv. stout, as the alcohol is hidden very well, only occasionally providing a little warmish feel at the rear of the tongue. But the texture is slightly flat, without healthy input of necessary fizz.
D: a medium-flavoured sweet stout with a body lighter than expected. It's not bad for its type but I'd wish it to be fuller and richer in terms of flavour and body, if not only for the sake of the occasion of X'mas~~ Apart from that, it's a very easy-to-drink stout all the same.
