Notes from Skopje in February 2016:

Half litre brown glass bottle purchased at a Vero hypermarket in Skopje for 39 denars (plus a 5 denar deposit). Has a green outlined square label and a green branded pry-off crown cap.

4.90% ABV. Described as a "premium lager" on the label.

Served chilled into a nonical pint glass. Expectations are low seeing as it's a Heineken-owned macrobrew brand.

HEAD: ~5cm wide white head. Thin and weak, but not overly fizzy. Retention is above average to boot - ~3 minutes. Leaves no lacing as it recedes.

BODY: It's a predictable clear pale copper of average vibrance. Clean, without any visible yeast particulate.

Appears adequately carbonated. It's a standard macrolager appearance. I'm anticipating an insipid beer.

AROMA: Cheap barley, cheap pilsner and/or Munich malts with an accompanying off-putting buttery sweetness, maybe basic Noble hop character (i.e. it's a biteen grassy).

Aromatic intensity is low. Suggests an inferior shallow brew which lacks flavour. Luckily, I don't detect any metallic off-notes, and any diacetyl is limited.

TASTE: Cheap. Old barley, lowest common denominator pilsner or Munich malts, faint buttery diacetyl, and zero hop presence. Imbalanced, with the diacetyl emerging as dominant to its detriment. It'd probably be better were it insipid, but at least it's not watery. Maybe some adjunct presence, but I suppose it can't be corn, and it doesn't taste like rice. About as shallow and simple as they come, but it doesn't have any offensive metallic flavours or anything. I've had worse.

TEXTURE: Buttery, smooth, wet, light-bodied, unrefreshing. Not a great companion to the taste, but it could be executed far worse...it's not harsh, astringent, gushed, hot, boozy, rough, or scratchy.

OVERALL: It's about what I expected...just a cheap widely available lager with nothing to offer the discerning drinker. I've had macrobrewed lagers with far more off-flavours and much less body. I can't say I wouldn't buy it again...the price point is just too appealing. But it's pretty bad relative to microbrewed beers/craft beers.

Pours a golden color, modest head and creamy lace that retains well but disappears 3/4 of the way through.
Little to no aroma. Only a slight hint of bread and yeast.
The feel is its best attribute. Crisp, light and refreshing. Slight malt taste. A bit watery. Mild hops finish.
This is the go to beer in Macedonia.

Format: a solid brown 500mL bottle with a standard cheap Euro label.

Appearance: a crystal clear golden amber colour with plenty of thin carbonation across the profile. A thin white head drops to a film. Okay at best.

Aroma: clean grains with a touch of malt and some grass and floral hops.

Taste: reasonable grain again with limited grass. No florals on the taste. Average.

Aftertaste: drops away fairly quickly with a grain fug and slight hop bitterness.

Mouth feel: reasonable for the style - moderate in feel with a medium to higher carbonation.

Overall: an okay but ultimately pretty cheap-tasting pilsener that never set out to be anything but an okay and cheap-tasting pilsener. If you want a sessional, lower-cost beer, here it is.

Clear gold body with a fluffy white head that leaves some lace.

Sweet cereal maltiness and a little herbal and floral hop aroma.

Sweet somewhat caramely with herbal hop. Somewhat of a slight oddness going on but fairly enjoyable for what it is.

Light body with lots of carbonation.
