Picked up a growler - $10 - which is nice.
Overall I was disappointed. The bitterness seemed out of balance to the hops flavors, which seemed underwhelming. The aroma was rather bland, lacking distinction and fresh hop character. Decent mouth feel with both softness and a sense of fullness. They didn't seal the growler cap with any tap or adhesive so it seemed to have lost some carbonation, but with an aggressive pour there was a decent head and decent stamina.

Poured from a freshly filled growler into flute sampling glasses, (growler 1), and a Spiegelau IPA glass, (growler 2). Just put on tap and fresh at the brewery.
Created and brewed by Tyler Tannenbaum, Blue Heron Pub brewmaster.
Malt: (all Briess), Pale Ale Malt, 2 Row Brewers Malt, Caramel 40L, Bonlander Munich
Hops in boil: Columbus, Chinook, Simcoe, Citra, Cascade
Dry Hop: Citra, Cascade
ABV: 7%
Appearance: Beautiful coppery gold color. Large, long lasting, creamy head the color of eggnog. Extensive lovely lacing as the head slowly dissipates.
Aroma: complex and evoked many descriptions - grapefruit, tangerine, subtle pine, subtle earthy and herbal, touch of floral. If you stick your nose in the chimney of the tulip (but not into the head), it evokes memories of walking in a Costa Rican cloud forest.
Taste and mouthfeel: follows the nose. Grapefruit, tangerine, a little piney, herbal and earthy. Bitterness, to me, is spot on. Plenty bitter to complement the flavor of the hops and malt without peeling the lining off your palate or numbing your taste buds. Also everyone commented that the bitterness was there when you tasted it, but doesn't linger. Balanced bitterness that doesn't linger - "just right." Dry, but not overly so. Full bodied. The hops and malt are very well balanced.
The finish is also near perfect. It is very clean - there is a nice aftertaste, without the astringent bitterness of some hop-forward IPA's. A phenomena unknown to wine drinkers and not talked about in polite company, but well known to IPA lovers are "hop burps", (eructations to genteel souls). With the right IPA these can be very pleasant, and this is the right IPA.
I sampled the first growler with a group with two IPA lovers, (including me), whose benchmark IPA is Surly Furious. There were also one person who doesn't like IPA's, one who is indifferent to IPA's and one who used to dislike IPA's but is appreciating them more and more.
From the IPA disliker, (who is also a trained chef): "I'm not normally an IPA drinker, but this I'll drink". "This would go very well with fatty, intensely flavored foods."
From the former IPA disliker who is learning to enjoy them: "I could drink this every day if it were available."
Hop Heart is truly in the top tier - a beer for the discerning hop head, but a non-IPA drinker can enjoy it also, a remarkable achievement. Is this beer really up there with the big boys like Furious or Sculpin? I'm putting it on that pedestal. Remember though, its fresh from the brewery, impossible to do with any bottle or canned beer, and its my home town brewery, brewed and sold by people that are my friends so I'm not unbiased. I can easily state that it is the best commercially sold IPA brewed within the borders of Wisconsin that I have tasted. I have no idea why, but to me this great brewing state has been weak when it comes to brewing IPA's.
