Had this from a growler that was poured at the brewery about 45 minutes ago. Poured from the growler into a pint glass, it pours a deep ruby red and brown mix. A light tan 1/4 inch head forms and reduces to almost not lacing. Mild visible carbonation, no sediment, and reasonably clear although dark.
The aroma is fantastic. As expected, there is a big coffee note up front followed by a caramel roasted malt sweetness.
The taste is right there with the nose. There is a great combination of coffee bitterness and malty sweetness. An interestingly pine hop flavor is present at the end. At the cooler temperatures there is a dirt and metallic taste that resolves with warmth, as well as a mild peppery finish.
The mouthfeel is medium/full bodied. There is perhaps just a hair more carbonation that I expected but still balanced well. It goes down smooth but leaves a nice tingle and bitterness at the finish.
Overall, this is a great beer and is easily drinkable. Someone at the brewpub told my wife that the second is better, and that would be impressive. I'm not sure what the ABV is, but it is not prominent. Very good.
