Deep chestnut in color. Rich malty ale with low hop bitterness and aroma. Smoked peat malt gives this ale a subtle smokey finish.

From 16 oz can. Pours dark brown with thin white head. Decent retention and lacing. Malty aroma with subtile smoke notes. Medium body. Good beer.

Poured into a pint glass, the appearance was a ruddy slight murky burnt dark orange to brown color. Foamy white head dissipated nicely. Sly lacing. The aroma starts with some sweet bready malts. Toffee and caramel malts, light smoke, sly peat. Low dried grassiness. The flavor brings it together with a nice sessionable smooth sweet feel to it. Low ABV helps keep the smooth pace moving nicely over my tongue. Just a tickle of carbonation on my tongue. Overall, decent enough Scottish ale that I could have again.

Poured from the 22 oz. bomber into an English nonick.
a: Clear copper with an inch thick white head which receded to thin surface foam and patchy lacing.
s; Fruit cup and funk.
t: Sour ripe fruit over a mild caramel malt. Sour finish.
m; Light to medium, good body, lots of carbonation tingle.
o: Probably a bad bottle, the sourness is unpleasant and ultimately the rest was drain poured. Will revisit another bottle and re-review as necessary.

From the 650 ml. bomber with a Best Before Jan. 2015 date snipped off the label. Actual name: Clans Scottish Ale.
It pours chestnut brown with a modest off-white head and a touch of foggy clarity.
The aroma is beautifully malty and smoky. No hops to speak of.
Medium to above-medium body.
In the first 3-4 sips I get the same lovely malty and smoky character with hops virtually invisible. But as I finish the bottle there is an annoying sour character that kicks in and takes things over. Too bad. It had such potential to start.

Pours a rusty brown with minimal off white head. Light scent, most dominant notes are solid smoke and light caramel without much else going on. Taste quite weak, with smoke notes being light, but more flavorful than the caramel malts and earthy hops. Lighter side of medium bodied and quite disappointing as i expect some more from the style. Overall, i expect a lot more maltiness from the style and this didn't deliver.

had this with dinner at the Woodstock Brewery on 9/16/11
aroma: no powerful aroma that I detected, slightly crisp
appearance: chestnut brown in a standard pint glass, no head or lacing
flavor: balanced, no overwhelming hops or malt
mouthfeel: boozy up front, slight carbonation
overall impression: an ok beer. one of the seasonals that they make for the Highland Games in Loon.

On a recent leaf-peeping expedition, my wife and I stopped at The Woodstock Inn for lunch. Along with their usual beers, they had this scotch ale in cask. Served in a pint glass, the beer was a reddish/brown color with a small tan head. Nice smoky caramel aroma. Caramel taste, lost that peat that was in the aroma. Pretty thin and insubstantial.
