At a time when most breweries are scaling back hop usage due to price and limited availability, we've gone to the complete opposite end of the spectrum with Through Hiker! This unfiltered behemoth is loaded with American Cascade and Centennial hops in the boil and over THREE POUNDS of Cascade in the hop percolator! As if that weren't enough, we dry-hopped Through Hiker in the fermenter with even more Cascade hops! What does all this mean? 56 IBU's is what it means. At 13.5 Lovibond, Through Hiker is Amber in color with a slightly reddish hue due to the addition of Crystal malt and the ample addition of Cara-Pils malt. A full 20% of the grain bill consists of Weyermanns Rye malt which adds a spicy, full, viscous mouthfeel to the beer. Our total grain bill weighed out at just over 450 lbs. which adds up to 7.9% ABV so please drink responsibly, lamp shades on the head are SO yesterday...

Dark brown cloudy color similar to a red ale.
Sweet, yeasty smell.
Thick and heavy on the palate.
Taste is a bready hop flavor.
Liquor store owner called it a Unicorn. Definitely haven't seen it before.
It is a little heavy but my buddy and I thoroughly enjoyed them!

From the bottle. Dec 2014 expiration date. Sampled on October 18, 2014. If this beer is retired why is it being reintroduced in bottle form at my local beer stores?
Slightly cloudy pale yellow-bronze pour with white foamy head and lots of lacing.
Great grainy and rye aroma on the nose with a toasted malt and earthy hops character lingering in the background.
Medium to full body. This beer feels yeasty to me.
The taste is also a nice grainy and malty merger with a moderately lingering bitterness. Kind of an overripe fruit note in there as well.

A: Deep but vibrant amber-copper. Faint off-white head, nice lacing.
S: Getting a lot of grapefruit and earthiness to it. Hops and grittyness are never a bad thing in a DIPA. Has a maltiness in the background for sweetness to back up the hops.
T: A solid bitter helping of hops are met by a grainy-rye character. It's not your average DIPA, but has a great earthiness to it like the nose leads on. Bitter and bold, but a nice faint sweetness in there as well. Interesting taste, in a very good way.
M: Quite smooth, not overly carbonated, but just the right amount for this tasty beer. Not too heavy either, which is a bit of a bonus here.
D: The ABV is pretty high, but so tasty you'll want more. Pretty unique in a world of hop bombs.
