Had a bottle at Glocke Backpackers.

Poured from a green bottle with a pull-off top (sweet). Not bad for washing down German/Swiss grub, but otherwise it's just a mostly harmless Euro lager. There's a sizeable cheap lager tang, like Heineken but magnified. Otherwise there's a hint of malts and enough balancing bitterness to keep this drinkable.

Review: Can of Rugenbräu Lager hell 4.8%ABV

The Lager hell is Rugenbräu’s most popular beer and is exported internationally.

Lovely faint notes of sweet pale grains, a nice soft smell of malt and hops but not overbearing.

The beer looks absolutely fantastic, you can definitely see what fresh pure Alpine air and water can do for the quality of a beer, the beer is so clean and clear. I honestly don’t think I have seen a cleaner beer than this, looks so great in appearance. Pours a light and absolutely clear yellow colour forming a good frothy head which stays and some pretty good lacing left around in the glass. Lucky for me to have this straight from a nice cool fridge.

Tasting had a light feel to it, with a strongish bitter hoppy aftertaste. A little bit of acidity, crisp and clean, faint flavours of malts and grains, but its the aftertaste that is the taste for this lager, lingering for a little while in the mouth. Overall was a very smooth drink, a good session beer. I liked it as it did the business and that’s all you can ask for in a beer, hit the spot. A decent refreshing everyday lager, scores high on drinkability.

Drank a liter of this on a sunny day, standing on the terrace of Mountain Hostel in Gimmelwald, Switzerland that has a fantastic view of the Swiss Alps. I had just spent the day hiking in the Alps. Served off the tap from the hostel bar into a Rugenbräu dimpled mug.

Very crisp smelling pale lager with a good bit of noble hops in the nose accompanied by a bit of the typical lager mild sweetness, appearing with a clear straw-coloured body with a nice fluffy head that leaves sticky thick lacing on the mug. The flavour itself is primarily a crisp, faint lemony sweetness accompanied by a nice noble hop presence, and not much else. The body is thin but feels crisp and refreshing. Leaves a smooth, mildly sweet, hallertau-hoppy aftertaste that is pleasing and refreshing.

Overall, not a particularly incredible lager, but in this atmosphere of standing on a terrace on the other side of the valley looking at the Jungfrau peak and the snow-covered Swiss Alps on a sunny summer day, this was a perfect beer that was refreshing after hiking most of the day away.

500ml can served in a thumbler glass.

A: Pours a light and absolutely clear yellow color forming a big, aired and soapy head. Good head retention and lots of lacings left around in the glass

S: Very malty in the nose. Absolutely low fermentation German style Lager. Bread and biscuity with nice notes of flowery hops

T: Slightly sweet upfront. Very malty and crispy. Strong notes of sweet pale grains. A bit ashy and some notes of honey too. Smooth hoppy end. Nice and mild hops bitterness

M: Very light body. Good carbonation. Extremely refreshing beer. Aftertaste is biscuity and bready

O: Excellent drinkability. A simple but pleasant German style Lager. By the way, much more to a Dortmunder than to a simple Euro Lager
