'Occupied Belgium IPA' brewed for the GABS festival in Melbourne, May 2014. Tried there on tap.
Pours a golden-tinged pale amber colour, clear with nice beige head, webbed out large bubbles but retaining nicely. Looks good.
Smells hoppy, mostly. Lots of resinous bitterness with fruity touches of grapefruit and lemon. Pine wood and chewy fruit really. Nice, but needs more Belgium.
Taste is quite similar. Hops take hold early and give off plenty of fruit character. Pulp mango is distinct but descends into more bitter grapefruit territory towards the finish. Not as bitter as it could be hops-wise but a touch of Belgian phenol on the back provides the twist as well as the cleanser. Not bad but still needs a bit more Belgium.
Full body has a nice velvety smoothness as it goes down. Remarkable for how hoppy this is.
Some uncomfortably medicinal Belgian characters on otherwise hoppy palate. Just feels like a bit of a clash rather than a smooth transition between the two faces of this beer. Fine overall though.
