A Christmas present from 2023, drunk in July 2024.

L: As black as the depths of hell (or so I'm told), with a small,ruby-tinged, coffee-coloured head. There's no visible carbonation, but there could be a mini whale swimming around in the beer, and I wouldn't be able to see it either.

S: In the nose, there's vanilla, berries, barrel, some umami notes fighting with the vanilla, and enough of a kick that there's a warmth in my throat just from smelling the beer!

T: Rich and chewy caramel with tangy berries and a hit of banana lollies, especially as the beer warms. There's a hint of the brandy barrel, with some woodiness and an ethereal spirit note. The finish is long, sweet, and tangy, but an acrid, retronasal bitterness comes in very late after swallowing as an afterpoint to counter the tangy note that lingers at the back of the tongue. There's warmth after the swallow, similar to when I stuck my nose in the glass, but the 11% is very well hidden.

M: The mouthfeel is full, thick and pillow soft. There's very little carbonation and no bite on the swallow. All is as it should be.

O: This was very enjoyable, with a good juxtaposition of sweetness, barrel and bitterness. As expected, it opened up as it warmed, and it was well worth the time taken to relax, sip, and enjoy.

Cheers!
