Brown 500ml bottle, best before 23 May 2009, drank on 10 Mar 2009.

This beers cask version won the 2005 CAMRA Gold medal for Strong Bitter.

Poured into an 'Old Speckled Hen' vase shaped glass.

Light tangarine/terracotta/amber body with an off-white creamy looking head. The body was a little hazy with carbonisation bubbles rising upwards to the head.

Fuggles hops give it a pleasant aroma, the barley used is white Maris Otter and that didn't add any smell I could find. There was no hint of the flavours I was about to encounter either.

Sour taste, as if the beer was turning (off), in fact it was vingarous to tell the truth. A pity because I've had this in its cask form years ago and it was super. The shock of the sourness lessened as I drank the beer but it wasn't right by any means.

6% ABV should have some body and this did, trouble is I couldn't get past the sourness even towards the end of the beer when my tastebuds had adapted to the flavours.

Had some vintage Stilton to help me finish off the beer, it helped greatly but isn't a mark of a good tasting or review.

The brewery has now closed, which is a shame, but if this is what the bottled version should tatse like I can see why Jack Hanby has had to shut down his brewery.
