L- Deeo orange-amber. Poured with minor haze and 3mm pale cream head. Quite heavy sediment left in the bottle.
S- I see where the term barleywine might have come from, as to me it can smell quite wine-like as this one does.
T- Boof! Gawd/shudder!!!! Blimey it honestly gave me a spasm there! It tastes like wine too, pungent and dry>slightly sour (white wine?) then a thumping timber note comes in. I have read zero on this beer yet beyond it's front lable, ie no detail or reviews at all. Is this aged in oak wine-barrels, as it sure as heck tastes like it. The timber-aged aspect is staggering, perhaps the most clear and pungent I've *ever* encountered.
F- The dry-wine aspect seems to do a good job at masking the ABV% which doesn't draw itself to my attention at all. Very unusal for a 9%-er!
O- DIFFERENT that's for sure! How does rate one rate such an eccentricity - hmm. 'When I were a lad' barleywine seemed to taste like very strong beer, beer-tasting beer though. These days it often seems to taste at time more like wine than beer. Tis most queer. Interesting to try. Would I wish to drink it again, no I don't think I would, it's accomplished I suppose (to some who enjoy this style), but not pitched at people with more chilled-out/trad tastes like me.
Now to read the lable for clues... Blimey it's from Norfolk! Brewed with 'First Gold, Cascade and Amarillo hops'. Nothing about timber barrels but maybe those notes I observed are from the hops instead?... no idea.
330ml bottle BB: End April-2021 £3.75 Bought from BeautifulBeers/BurySt.Edmunds as part of a large pick-your own consignment to London.
