500ml Bottle conditioned: best before Mar 2013, poured into an 'Abbot Ale' glass tankard on 22 Aug 2012.
We are talking dark here: it looks almost jet black, even when held to a strong light source: on top a good firm head of tan coloured bubbles.
The smell is semi-burnt malts and lightly roasted/smoked coffee beans on a rough bed of flaked dark chocolate.
The flavours were very simular to the smell, but add some liquorice roots (remember them?) to the aromas mentioned and the taste comes alive.
The body is leaning towards full and almost creamy, certainly deep and flavoursome. The dark chocolate feel giving the beer a slightly bitter taste as you get into the tasting. This beer is more-ish; meaning a single pint isn't enough to appreciate the complexity and delights it holds.
This is one of a four pack (different beers) from this brewery a mate gave me: I hope the other three brews are as good as this one.

Served on Cask into a half pint pot at the Sussex Arms, Twickenham
Very dark brown to black in colouration and a small head
Smells slightly burnt/roasted nuts, bitter chocolate
In the taste I found roasted malt, liquorice, chocolate and a little fruit in the finish (maybe a berry?)
Mouthfeel was decent with a dryish to bitter finish, not too watery and a decent amount of chewy-ness which is what I expect from a cask porter in the 5% ABV bracket
A good example of an English Porter
