A 500ml bottle with a BB of April 2014. I bought this from a supermarket in Hartlepool over a year ago (unbelievably long BB date). Conditioned with live yeast.
Poured into a tulip pint glass. An orange-amber colour with plentiful carbonation and lots of chunky yeast sediment swirling around. Forms a large head of creamy white foam that lasts for a few minutes before settling as a surface layer. Aroma of earthy yeast esters with hints of tart apples, faint caramel malt, mild stewed leaves and a twinge of solvent in the background. Not brilliant.
Tastes of weak caramel malt with a yeasty character and a dry finish. Notes of earthy yeast, faint unripe apples, a hint of stewed leaves and some solventy 'heat' to round things off. Quite dry; not much bitterness to speak of. Mouthfeel is thin and watery, with tingly carbonation and little body. Pretty astringent - dries the palate. Aftertaste of stewed leaves with solvent overtones.
Blech - rubbish. I hear the term dishwater used to describe bland English ales, and it would be perfectly appropriate to use in this case. Weak taste and aroma, accompanied by some nasty off-flavours. Perhaps this has been sitting around for too long, but then again the brewer seems to think it would last until 2014. Not recommended.
