A Finnish steam beer...and not the only one, actually.
Purchased at a Prisma supermarket in Kuopio and served cold into a pilsner glass. Expectations are above average. Reviewed live as a Steam beer (aka California Common) per the label (which calls it an "Suodattamaton Höyryolut" of "Amerikansk Typ").
This is apparently a collaboration with the Yalobusha Microbrewery out of Mississippi. 4.6% ABV.
CAN: 50cl. Aluminum. Standard pull-tab. Generally appealing label art (which plays to the Finnish fascination with Americans rather unabashedly). Best before: 26.04.2016.
No bubble show forms as it's poured.
HEAD: ~4 inches wide. White colour. Frothy as hell. Soft-looking. Not very thick. Somewhat weak. Leaves a light coating of lacing on the sides of the glass as it recedes.
Retention: Great. ~10 minutes.
BODY: Clean yellow of subpar vibrance; it's a bit dull. Copper hues abound. No yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible.
Looks about right for a steam beer, without impressing. Has no unique or special features.
AROMA: Has a clean hop profile complemented nicely by the clean lager yeast. Clean pilsner malt with a kiss of buttery character. Not too grainy or cereal-dominant. Some lemongrass and grassy (maybe Noble?) hops. Hints of hay. Traces of vague fruitiness.
Overall, I find it appealing. It's right on the money for a steam beer, and the aromatic intensity is average.
Has no off-notes or booze.
TASTE: Delivers on the promises of the aroma, yielding a steam beer with uncommonly aggressive hop notes delivering grassy character in addition to more American hop notes like a kiss of oniony Simcoe. Lemongrass and dried hay lend it an almost farmhouse element that goes with the pilsner malt and flaked barley backbone surprisingly well.
Average depth, duration, and intensity of flavour. Balanced and enjoyable, with a pleasant build and sufficient cohesion. Not quite gestalt, but well put together.
TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, refreshing, light-bodied, crisp, and clean - though not as clean as most lagers. This mouthfeel complements the taste nicely, bringing out the clean malt backbone. But there isn't quite a harmony or natural marriage of texture and taste. This doesn't accentuate any specific notes in particular.
Well-carbonated, if a bit overly so.
OVERALL: A surprisingly faithful Steam beer with a refreshing taste and an adequately sutle flavour profile, Mississippi beer will please fans of this all-but-ubiquitous style and will introduce many a Finn to warm-fermented lagers. As drinkable and enjoyable as it is, it isn't a world-class or unique offering. And as a side-note, its ~3.50 euro pricetag is unreasonable. I think it's safe to say it's one of the best Finnish steambeers, if only because it's one of the only ones. I'd get it again if not for the price, and would recommend it to visitors to Finland - at least, if one must buy beer at the supermarket.
