The brewery styles this a "Vaalea lager" (literally "light lager") but it isn't a light lager in the American sense. More a Premium Lager or (if we must call it this) a Euro pale lager.
CAN: 56.8cl/imperial pint. Aluminum. Fun red label art.
22 EBU. EBC 5. 33 kcal per 100ml. Best before: 08.09.15.
Served cold into a pilsner glass at low altitude in Kuopio, Finland. Purchased at a Prisma supermarket there. Expectations are average.
No bubble show forms as it's poured.
HEAD: ~3 inches wide. White colour. Not real frothy, foamy, or creamy, but I suppose it's adequately so. Decent thickness. Uneven consistency. Decent complexion. Leaves no lacing on the sides of the glass as it recedes.
BODY: Clear pale yellow. Definitely evokes a pilsner, premium lager, or light lager appearance. Clean, with no visible yeast or sediment.
Looks decent. I can't say it has any unique or special characteristics. Some might even call it watery.
AROMA: Pilsner/helles malt, off-putting stale barley, cereals, maybe corn, and a horrid hop profile that suggests poor temperature management during brewing. Mushy pea off-notes/pea soup. Not the clean light pleasant aroma one hopes for. Off-putting and unappealing.
Aromatic intensity is average for a light or pale lager.
It lacks a yeast profile.
TASTE: Poor. Has an odd mashed pea off-note, a horrid soapy hop profile, and generic pilsner/helles malts in the foundation. Horrible balance, dreadful build for a beer that's meant to be a neutral clean lager.
Shallow, plain, simple, and not at all pleasant. What happened?
TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, unrefreshing, light-bodied, and crisp. Overcarbonated.
There's no harmony of texture and taste.
OVERALL: My review is truncated only because I find it difficult to take sips of this. The odd off-notes (including soap, diacetyl, and mashed peas/pea-soup) are tough to stomach. This is easily one of the worst Finnish beers I've had. I'd recommend avoiding this. Not only is it a fundamental failure in its style, but it will turn off the discerning drinker, and is likely only a success in supermarkets because it's branded with The Hurriganes - a successful band here. Ugh. Shockingly undrinkable for a beer in its style, and expensive to boot.
