Appearance - Dark red, with medium carbonation and a thin head which almost completely vanished pretty quickly. A little hazy.

Smell - A little bit of malt, but mostly just alcohol.

Taste - Mostly just sweet malts, but it does have just enough hops to back it up. The alcohol stands out too much, and it is lacking in complexity.

Mouthfeel - Syrupy, and not as cloying as many Belgian ales. The carbonation settles gradually. This is the beer's main strong point.

Drinkability - Slightly above average, considering the style and ABV.

Overall - Pretty disappointing. Though I did only pay $5 for the bottle, so it is the cheapest strong Belgian ale I have seen in Australia.

A limited release Strong Dark Belgian Ale, using traditional Belgium Yeasts.

A: Dark Red, very limited head on pour, struggled to get any really...only a little initial frothy foam that quickly dissapated leaving a very thin film around the glass. Carbonation was soft...overall looked like a red wine.

S: Whoa, here it all begins. Quite full, some rum, dark fruits / plummy, alcohol evident (as expected)...hints of roasted malts & coffee.

T: all of the above except expect a big alcohol kick...we actually had a bottle of Chimay Blue to sip against it to compare...maybe we shouldn't have - one has hundreds of years experience, the other has just released a limited batch with limited experience. But then again, there were definate similarities. Mostly the biggest difference was the finish. 4 Ducks finishes with a huge grog kick (alcohol)...maybe a little too big (nail polish comes to mind)...its definately rougher.

M: soft carbonation, with a heavier mouthfeel.

D: Unfortunately the alcohol content is way too evident, & makes for a struggle to finish the glass. Despite this the flavours are not too bad, & I bought a 4 pack, which I am happy to continue chewing through...so all in all this ain't too bad, just a little rough around the edges.
