The CANQuest (tm), in its ever vigilant search for new CANs from around the world, recently came up with a new source in China! It reinforces a point that I had not CANsidered when embarking on this journey - CANned beers are an international phenomenon with other countries getting what they CANsider "imported" CANs from other countries as well as producing their own domestic CANned beers. Coupled with the modern micro-CAN craze in the US & The CANQuest (tm) has the potential to be unending.

From the kelly green CAN with the distinctive red "K": "Kingway Lager Beer Quality Grade: Premium".

I Crack!ed the CAN open & began an inverted Glug until the resultant head became too much to handle. I backed off and watched as it became two-plus fingers of foamy, fizzy, bone-white head that quickly fell to wisps. Color was Pale-Straw (SRM = 1 -2) with NE-plus quality clarity, enabling me to see into the future. Nose had a grape-y, vinous quality, leaving me unsure that it is a Euro Pale Lager as identified. I have smelled this sort of thing before, believe me. Mouthfeel was thin and watery. The taste was odd, not as clean as I would expect from a lager, but I did not get the dreaded corn adjunct flavor, either. It had an odd tang, though, perhaps from the malt, maybe from the hops or even some combination thereof. I think that I will go with the malt & yeast as it vaguely reminded me of sourdough bread. I CANnot go so far as to say that it was unpleasant, though. It was unusual, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. Finish was semi-dry, slightly sour/tangy with a lingering vinousness. At least it was refreshing on a hot, humid summer evening.

This was my second beer while travelling on business in China in April 2015. My research notes before leavign the states had this beer considered to be #9 out of the Top 10 China (Lager) beers. It had a 4.5 ABV according to my language assistant. I poured from a dark, 600ml bottle into a glass.

A - golden, straw yellow with plenty of carbonation resulting in a nice hear
S - lemony, with a hint of hops
T - somewhat sweet, lemony and hint of hops
F - light with carbonation

Better than the Pearl River (Euro Lager) but not a true lager either -- its lacking.

Taste is a bit thin, grainy, with a slight hop.
A mild nose. Gold and crystal clear, medium head and lite body.
This is just a fermented thin beer that I would pass

The rain in here in Hong Kong refuses to let up, guess I'll drink more beer. Poured from an 11.2 oz. can. Has a light golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is very mild, some light malts. Taste is crisp, malts, some grains, not a lot of flavor but kind of refreshing. Feels light in the mouth and overall is a passable beer, but nothing special.

Bought from a convenience store in Mongkok. Drunk in my hostel room from a tumbler.

Pours a pale gold colour with an almost green tinge. Fluffy head of sparse white bubbles that settles out to a ring of foam. Leaves no lace but a persistent string of fizz. Bit blah; as expected.

Smells sweet and adjuncty. Mostly corn but a decent amount of honeyed oat, and a slight citric edge to it as well. Just mild acid that could be down to pure and simple carbonation, but makes it tolerable; not too sweet although it smells a bit insipid.

Taste is bland and empty. Bit of grain upfront may be genuine, with a touch of honey, barley and sticky rice. Gets maybe a touch of melon midway but doesn't go anywhere, just a whole heap of nothing on the finish but it's not crisp and clipped, it just fades quickly to a muted version of before. Mildly sweet, too, which is a turnoff. Yeah pretty meh.

Flat yet quite thick in the mouth. Not full, though; just empty glugginess. Needs more fizz.

Might go well with Chinese cuisine, but as a beer it's a big empty cauldron of nothing.

Kingway Beer (Premium Lager) has a thin-to-medium, white head and a mostly clear, golden appearance, with some lacing and very fine particulate matter floating about. Some streaming bubbles are present. The aroma is of sweet, lightly toasted barley malt, and the flavor is of sweet, lemony, pale malt, cracker, a touch of paper, and just a kiss of the hops. Mouthfeel is light to medium, and Kingway Beer finishes crisp, clean, refreshing, drinkable, mild, and semi-dry. Overall, this is a very good beer, and I think it is certainly worth a try.

Pours a clear, straw color. Two inch head of a white color. Great retention and good lacing. Smells of strong pale malt, grain, hint of sweet malt, hint of sulfur, and a hint of hops. Fits the style of an Euro Pale Lager. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of pale malt, slight sweet malt, grain, hint of hop, and a hint of sulfur. Overall, decent appearance, aroma, and body for an Euro Pale Lager.

A: Poured a staw yellow/clear gold, with a white head that quickly disappeared. Left basically no lacing on the glass.

S: Smelled mostly of corn sweetness, with a faint apple and malt undertone.

T: Strongly of sweet corn, and a light tartness of apple. No malt or hop profile in the taste at all. Surprisingly not a strong skunky flavor, for being in green bottles for God knows how long.

M: Very light on the tongue with crisp carbonation. Easy to drink, with no strong dryness.

O: Easy to drink, would go well with a spicy Chinese dish to cool your mouth. Not something I ever plan on buying again. Found it at a Grocery Outlet for 5 bucks.

A: Bright, clear straw/gold color. Poured a 2 finger stark white head that dissipated immediately to a thin skim. Decanted continually. Lace intermittently in wide, broken rings.

S: Sweet, wet grain and crackers. A little green apple tingle but little in the way of hop character (I think I was just imagining the faint noble hop aroma).

T: Similar to the nose; very sweet muted malt and green apples. Again, no real hop character, but the beer did balance out in the end to be crisp, dry and fairly clean; some residual sweetness. I really think it misses the style. There wasn't anything seriously wrong (or right either).

M: Light body. Ample carbonation; very active on the palate. Light, nearly crisp and dry but for a bit of a sweet coating.

O: Best way to categorize this one is that there's nothing wrong with it but it misses the style significantly.

I found this single, green, 12oz bottle at the Binny's store in Plainfield, IL for $2.19. A rather plain looking label with no freshness date or anything about the beer on it.

The beer poured a clear medium gold color and made a 1-finger dish soap looking white head. Despite the ugliness of the head, it did hang around a few minutes and left some really nice lacing on the glass.

Initially the beer gives off a slight Heineken-like green bottle skunk odor, but under that you can pick up some sweet grain smell, but unfortunately there is no noticeable malt or hop aroma in the nose.

The beer is on the sweet side, but not overly so. It's drinkable but it lacks character. Nothing offensive in it but nothing memorable either. Tastes like a cheap lager without the hop bite.

Light bodied, but I wouldn't quite call it watery. Medium carbonation with a slight metallic finish despite it coming in a glass bottle.

Drinkable but nothing I would seek out again - especially at that price.

A- murky yellow. Weak/no lace.
S - weak sweet smell
T- not very hoppy, weak apple juice taste. Basically light apple juice with alcohol.

Not the best I've ever had, but very drinkable. Easy to drink more than one. Got it in the 10 beer of the world case and has been the worst one yet. Still, it's not a terrible beer.

I got this brew from a "10 Best Beers of the World" pack from World Market in Claremont, FL. Upon reading how badly the last and only review of the beer was, I was really curious to try to see if it was truly that bad.

Appearance: The brew poured with very weak white head with barely any retention at all. Color was golden/slightly amber.

Smell: The smell was sweet, smells kind of like apple juice. No real hop or malty presence.

Taste: The taste is pretty low profile and smooth and mellow. No really hop presence whatsoever, nor is there anything representative of malts. The only flavors I can pickup are reminiscent of apple juice and alcohol, with an underlying bitterness. Low points go to this one because these characteristics are not typical of a Euro Lager.

Mouthfeel: Mouthfeel is fairly bleak. It's thin but seems to leave a feeling on my teeth not typical of any other beer that I have tried.

Drinkability: The brew itself isn't bad and I wouldn't say that I choked it down but it wouldn't be the beer I go to the store for.

My mate brought around a six pack of this and have never heard of it or seen it but he tells me its brewed in heiniken's chinese brewery but obviously its cheaper and it comes in a green bottle like heiniken expect it states that its a full strength premium lager and has a big red k for the kingway logo so here goes,it pours a pale golden see thru hue with average carbonation that leaves a fast vanishing one finger head and no lacing at all,the aroma is very weird almost sweetish like creaming soda and a hint of weak malt,it has a rather light macro mouthfeel to it with tastes of weak grains, malts and some liquid hops, overall this is a macro brew no doubt in my mind and leaves the palette very unsatisfied and would not even bother wasting your time with this avoid at all costs.
