When I was planning my trip to el valle I thought, why not look at Beer Advocate and see if there’s anything worth checking out while I’m visiting. From previous experience I didn’t expect to find anything in terms of bottle shops or a craft beer scene so I got a kick out of seeing the HEB listed. Since I ended up staying literally across the street I ended up stopping in here for some snacks. While there I (of course) perused the beer selection. There’s a better selection here than the HEB in my ‘hood! Now, having (formerly) had regular access to the Bay area meccas of City Beer Store, Beer Revolution, and even the Berkeley Bowl I wouldn’t even bother with this HEB. But—this is Texas. Not just Texas, this is the valley and there’s not a whole lot of craft beer options. I found some great deals—Chimay blue label for $6, four pack of Duvel for $4, and a whole lotta Stone Self-Righteous for half off. Some of them were still fresh!

I was in Harlingen on business and this was close to the Courtyard, so I gave it a shot.

This is a large grocery store. It was clean with a great selection of produce and Mexican foods. Very busy for a Sunday night.

The quality beer seemed fine. The beers I saw were within their freshness dates, and there was no dust on the bottles. The selection was divided into cold and room temp on either side of one aisle. The cold beers were mainly BMC and Mexican beer with some Shiner and New Belgium. The room temp beers included some pleasant surprises from Stone, DFH, and Left Hand. I also found some Real Ale beers, which I picked up since they're only available in Texas.

The service is what you'd expect from a grocery, but not a beer store. Just someone there to check you out and you're on your way. If you are in Harlingen and want to pick up something other than macro or Shiner, this is your best (and maybe only) bet.

This HEB was suggested to me by a liquor store owner in Harlingen. He said it was the best place around and unfortunately he really wasn't kidding.

It is located just East off 77/83 before the 83 split if heading North. I remember the appropriate exit as being M Street, but you cannot miss the two Teepees out front of the store.

The selection was broken into a few locations. The hot beer aisle, the cold beer aisle and then a cold case at the deli section with a handful of Belgians and German offerings. The offerings were pretty standard stuff for the area with the most excitement being in seeing the array of New Belgium beers and St. Arnold. Also Bridgeport seemed to be standard. The odd thing was that Shiner Kolsch was nowhere to be seen in any South Texas store.

At any rate, this is the only game I found in town so go by and they will have something to scratch the itch, but be sure to check all the areas, hot beer, cold beer, and deli.
