This rauchbier pours an orange / brown color with a thin white head. The smell is obviously smoky with a scent that is more akin to a BBQ then to a campfire. The smell is a little bit sweet even giving it an almost BBQ sauce kind of scent. The smokiness of the beer is intense, but not as much as many of the beers from what I consider the gold standard brewery for rauchbiers, Aecht Schlenkerla. Underneath the smokiness the malts take over and give the beer a semi-sweet grainy quality. There is also a peaty whisky quality that I kind of like, unfortunately the somewhat sweet quality isn’t totally pulled off, it gives the beer a pretty unique flavor, but it is also a little artificial in my opinion and this artificialness kind of lingers on the tongue. There is no real evidence of yeast or hops to speak of. The body is firmly medium, which is ok, but I would probably prefer it a little higher. This is a fairly high alcohol rauchbier also at 7%, which is something that I think should be done more often since the flavor of these is so damn intense that you could probably really amp up the alcohol without detracting from the flavor. This is an interesting beer to drink, but it doesn’t hold a candle to any of the Aecht Schlenkerla examples that I have tried.

The smoke flavour takes over the entire taste.

From the bottle, it poured somewhat dark in color with a whitish moderate (for a wheat beer) head. Overall pleasant taste, but nothing that really inspires.

2017 Update: Pours amber with a a nice head that lasts. Peaty smoke in the nose. ...and mouth. If whiskey flavor is your thing, this is your beer.

Stopped into Hutt'n in Nürnberg on 25SEP11 for some refreshments, and Smokey George caught my eye. Two 0.5l bottles later (€2.90 each), I was satisfied!

George was a deep, clear copper, almost chestnut-like in color. Head was thin, off-white, fine and creamy, leaving good lacing behind. An aroma of smoke just jumps right out at you! Whoa!! Quite rich, with whiskey also detectable. Medium-bodied, it was a touch prickly, yet still fairly smooth.

Taste is smokey all the way. Almost like a Schlenkerla Rauch, though there is some peaty action going on here. Very dry all the way, the whiskey is noticeable yet restrained. Quite good, if you like Rauchs (and I DO!). Prosit!!

Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours an amber color with a white head. The aroma is very meaty smoke and is very strong. You can smell the beer from several feet away. The flavor is more of the same, with a ton of smoke and some caramel malt. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Maybe not quite as good as some of the Aecht Schlenkerla rauchbiers, but a very nice smoky beer.

The amber color is nice, but alas there hardly is any head on the beer and no lace.

Smells very smoky, in a way that only differs slightly from the beechwood-smoked beers, bringing out a peaty, sharper note. Malt presence is big too, enjoyably sweet.

More malt-sweetness to the taste. Again, little hops present. The finish brings out the smokiness, which slowly develops into a more unique kind, which is a sharper and more bitter one. The bitterness seems somewhat rancid and doesn't please me all the way. The reference to whisky is unmistakable.

Feels good and creamy in the mouth, but is just a bit too flat.

I prefer the brewer's other smoked beer over this one by miles.

A dark smoked beer made with Scottish Whiskey malt. Hints of smoke in the aroma mixed with band aids. Light brown colored head was stubby, but held out for a minute or so. Dark amber colored beer has a nice glow to it. Tastes like band aids too. It's like plastic mixed with some medicinal cough syrup, and a dash of smokiness. The off flavor is quite strong, and definitely not from the smoked malt. I picked up a couple of bottles of this beer and they all tasted the same so it's not just a bad bottle. Maybe a bad batch. If it didn't have the plastic flavor it would probably taste like a brown ale with a nice smoked coating. Give it a try, chances are it will be better then what I had.
