Philadelphia Original lager is just a contract brew, and in reality, it's really just re-labelled Saranac Lager. There was a time when it was something different, but Red Bell has gone through so many changes that it's irrelevant to even mention it. Accept it. I'm not even sure that it'll be around for that much longer considering the brewpub at the Wachovia Center has closed. On the other hand, Red Bell has weathered more than that - it's like the brand that just won't die. That said...
P.O.L. pours a clear, yellow-gold body that's capped by a short but creamy bright-white head. It drops readily but maintains a decent collar and thin surface covering. It leaves some limited lace that sticks just above the level of the beer. The nose expresses a thin, wheat-like malt and some nice hops that are floral and a touch lemony. The body is thin with a very fine, median carbonation that's crisp in the mouth. The flavor delivers a delicately balanced combination of gently sweet and lightly tangy malt; citrusy and floral hop flavor; and firm bitterness. It finishes dry with some lingering malt and hops. I'm not sure why they decided to label it a "pilsener" as it's a great American wheat! It's clean, light, and delicately balanced with enough character to keep it interesting beyond a serving or two. It's very refreshing and enjoyable!

This is a pretty standard lager, but as far as American lagers go, its pretty good. Copper color with some malt in the aroma, but not much is detectable.
Flavor is mostly toasted malts with a very slight hop bitterness. Very easy to drink, but not big on flavor or much else. Worth the $2 I paid for the pint, however.

Pours a nice amber color with a somewhat large head, trails to about a 1/4 inch, little lace. Slight malt aroma, and taste. Good, creamy mouthfeel, and nice taste of malt and hop balance. Very drinkable, but not for me.

Deep copper in color. Nice malty smell. Fresh tasting, and very sweet malty. Does indeed lack the hops to give it some bite. Very filling.

Very nice appearance...a nice copper color, as Frank said not much nose, some malt aroma. Nice malt backdrop with lesser hops. I agree with Frank4sail...an average lager. I'll stick with Yuengling....Overall drinkable though...

Golden color nice retention and lace. Not much nose. Malty flavor but the brew lacks hop balance. An average lager...
