Well, well, well - a Turkmen beer at last. Thanks, Mark, for bringing this back from Ashgabat to Moscow. Comes in a brown half liter bottle with a multi-colored label featuring "ZIP" in red lettering on a gold banner above "Piwo Abadan". There are also two frothy mugs on the label. Everything on the front and back of this domestic labelling is in Turkmen, so beats me what the ingredients list says (I'll note that there are four items, though). Can't figure out the expiration date either. Let's see what this baby's got...
Pours a clear orange gold under a 1.5 finger white head with decent if bubbly foam that fades only slowly, leaving some good lace. There's a sweet, almost citrus nose, with a hint of the bad watermelon so common in Soviet-style beers. The mouth is fairly light and only mildly carbonated, but it does end up fairly sticky. The taste is mild, with subdued fruity malt bordering on that bad watermelon. There's a bit of hops lurking here, but it never really emerges. What's there is spicey, rather than metallic. This is clearly a Soviet-style brew (see "Zhigulovskoye"), but it's a good rendition.
