Pours two fingers of head on a clear straw body.
The aroma is dank and ripe grapefruit and lemon.
The taste is lemon and grapefruit bitter with just enough sweetness to balance it out.
The texture is crisp and fizzy.
Good flavor and easy to drink.

12oz bottle no date – purchased at Boynton Liquors San Jose, CA
Hotel tumbler glass – 11/20/13

Cute label - says this is now brewed by Hermitage Brewing which would explain things

A: Pours a plain caramel amber body with some nice clarity and carbonation evident. A healthy head of khaki foam forms over top with fair retention efforts displayed. Nice sticky lacing observed as the foam grips the glass after each sip.

S: Caramel toffee sweetness up front with a touch of some herbal weed stems and a flash of orange peel on the end stretch. Smells more like a barley wine with a firm malt presence. Not a terrible aroma but not exactly balanced or hop friendly for an APA.

T: Biscuit with an overwhelming caramel malt sweetness. Hops are secondary wielding flavors of orange citrus and pine. Moderate level of perceived bitterness with a slightly resinous trailer of earthy herbals. Alcohol is nicely masked but this is just too sweet and malty for my liking.

M: Moderate filling that seems even heavier by the loaded malt base. There is a light drying effort towards the finish but the feel is watery overall with some soft residual lingering.

D: Not so good. Hops are faded. Lacks proper malt to hop balance and comes off more like a malty barley wine. Either this is a fairly old sample or just plain bad.

Hoppy ending was not achieved. Avoid.

Hoppy Ending Pale Ale: Palo Alto, CA

-ABV 5.5%, 12oz bottle
-Poured into a Blue Moon glass

-*I was really rooting for this beer because it's from my back yard!

-Appearance: Amazing head! (or as my tasting notes read: "sweet head!") Thick head retention, about 1 1/2 inches thick! Nice delicate lace on the glass as it disappears. Yellow/amber color, not completely clear, but that could be the temp too.

-Smell: Very delicate, lightly fruity. Not much.

-Taste & Mouth Feel: Just fell flat. The hops were there, but they were secondary to the malt. I always hope for lots of hop in my pale ale, especially when they name it "hoppy ending". More like sad ending. The appearance on this beer was amazing, I just wish the taste had lived up to expectation.

A - Pours an almost clear golden-orange with a finger of frothy white head. The head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind some nice lacing.

S - Aroma is a mix of grapefruit, orange, tropical, and citrus hops with some sweet caramel and biscuit malts.

T - Starts off with a mix of grapefruit, tropical, and citrus hops with some bitterness and some sweet caramel malts. Through the middle, some light floral hops come through with a bit more bitterness and some biscuit malts. The finish is a mix of grapefruit and citrus hops with a hint of pine, some mild bitterness, and some sweet bready malts.

M - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a dry and bitter finish.

D - Very drinkable. Nice balance hoppy pale ale. Good hop profile.

A decent brew. I find the bitter tones a bit too much, with the carbonation biting my tongue at the same time. Kind of hits as a one two punch and then that's it. Doesn't really seem to deliver a flavor stream that is anything beyond a mild smack to the mouth with no distinct character. It's a pale ale, it's hopped, blam, there you have it. Nice enough to try, but could use a bit more rounding and subtle character to it. Still a pleasure to drink though.
