On tap at the Rose & Crown in Palo Alto.
A: Pours a pitch black body with some translucence at the edges. A skillful pour produces a pint glass with a brimming light tan head; it retains fairly well before vanishing entirely. No lace.
S: Coffee, milk chocolate, roasted grain. I pick up a touch of dark fruit or anise; I can't really tell. It's not particularly expressive in the nose, so a lot of agitation is needed.
T: A small amount of roast, grain / oats. Coffee, milk chocolate (contributing a slight lactic twang), and an undercurrent of anise, which I enjoy.
M: This is smooth, as I'd expect an oatmeal stout to be, but it's much heavier than I'd expect for a 6.9%er. Lots of residual sugars here, and they amp up the taste, but not enough to stand out over some lower-ABV alternatives (Velvet Merkin).
D: I like it. I'd certainly have it again. But I wouldn't make a special trip to Firehouse just because it's on tap.
