Don't let the name fool you - this is a Doppelbock all the way. And a darn good one at that. The bartender said the ABV was "approaching 8%" but that didn't seem firm enough to list it as the official level, so I have left that blank.
The beer pours dark amber, with muted carbonation and minimal lace, into a standard pint glass. A vigorous swirl will regenerate a short-lived ring of tan foam. The aroma is sweet, malty and fruity. Taste is top-notch. Strong flavors of cherry, caramel, brown sugar, and dark malts, with just enough noble hop bittering to smack the lips and elicit the next swallow. There is an appropriate alcohol bite, and the mouthfeel is marked by the lower carbonation level and a medium-full body.
In my opinion, this beer stands up to most any German doppelbock, or any of the American craft brewers' versions I've had. Another good effort from Square One.
