Each year we brew a big wheat and barley wine at 10% ABV and age it in oak for a period to further the complexity of flavour. Each year we add a ‘twist’ to the recipe. This year we’ve literally gone ‘wild’. Murray’s Anniversary Ale 3 is, to the best of our knowledge, Australia’s first commercially brewed ‘Brett Beer’ – a beer brewed using the ‘wild’ yeast strain Brettanomyces (Brett). The first half of the batch was brewed in early June 2008 before being transferred into French oak barrels (previously used for Shiraz) for an extended period of maturation. We added the Brettanomyces strain to the barrels at transfer back in June and allowed the Brett to work its magic until late October. The beer was then carefully transferred from the barrels and blended with the second half of the batch in stainless for a few weeks further conditioning prior to bottling.

Courtesy of MrKennedy. Tasted as part of an AA1-6 vertical. Reviewed from notes.
Ruby mahogany, healthy saffron-hued head, falls to a very resilient thick collar.
Pine-lime splice, lemon sherbet and strawberry shortcake. Touch of grapefruit peel. Rich toffee malts underneath, but just put into the shade by the Brett character. Nice dreamy mustiness
Similar but less complex. Nice blend of fruity Brett and hop notes, with a somewhat subdued Barleywine character.
Medium bodied with mild booze warmth before a mildly tart, bitter finish
Restrained use of Brett leads to a great result. While there's some diminution of the Barleywine character, that was always going to happen. Really quite tight all-round.

750ml bottle, split 6 ways, from Liquor on Parade, Kingsford. Into a Fantome tulip.
The last beer brewed at the old Taylor's Arm site near Macksville, hence the addition of Brett given the need to sanitise equipment anyway upon relocation.
Poured darker than both #1 and #2, with a deeper amber-brown look to it. No dirty water look to this. Nice creamy beige foam sitting on top.
Slighter funkiness than i recall from this fresh back in 2008/2009. Less fig and caramel and slightly sweet. Some oak and dark fruit came through after a fair bit of swirling.
A little funky, still some fig and more fruity than other prior vintages.
The best part of the brett was the slight tartness at the back. Not massive like previous, but did help add something to the finish. Solid body and carbonation about spot-on.
Really wasn't sure what to expect from this with some years age on it. Given the Brettanomyces addition, it was my most anticipated, sadly it was also the least enjoyable of the 6 year vertical opened.

Opened to celebrate New Year's Eve.
Cloudy amber colour with a fair amount of sediment. Small, off-white head. Good head retention.
Massive Brett aroma. Tons of earthy funk and a very light tartness. I'm pretty sure this is Brett C with its somewhat fruity character. Nice light sweetness too.
Moderately malty and then fades to a massive hit of Brett. Lots of pineapple and funk. Good light tartness. A little chocolate. Very interesting.
Medium body with moderate carbonation. Nice.
A really nice beer. The brett character is pronounced and well balanced within itself. The Brett clearly dominates but in a good way.
