310mL glass at the Local Taphouse. Reviewed from notes
Deep burgundy with a strong and resilient mocha head. Eventually subsides leaving a sticky lace curtain.
Substantial lifted sweetness, with cherries, muscatels, red apple and caramelised figs prominent. For a while that's all I get, but later hints of woody spices and dark chocolate poke through.
Big muscovado sweetness upfront. Glace cherries, Christmas pudding, raisins, dates. Mild notes of nutmeg and cassia bark offer some relief from the relentless sweet dark fruits.
Syrupy but medium body for the ABV. Appropriately restrained carbonation. Some boozy warmth in the finish, but to be expected.
Consensus amongst my drinking buddies was that this style of beer would be better savoured at home on a chilly evening (hint, hint Shawn). A bit difficult to appreciate any subtleties and complexities in a bar environment. In saying that, I identified more out of my second glass than the first.

Pours a vibrant red colour. Head is beige, pale, nice dense rim around the edge. Lacing is quite nice. Murray's definitely brew a good-looking ale.
Smells Belgian. Sweet, quite a lot of toffee with orange pekoe and brandy snap. Dry, though, coming through at the back; has a hangover feel to it which puts me off a bit.
Taste is sweet and strong. Toffee with, Belgian candi sugar, some brandy-soaked orange peel and cumquat. Bit strong, yet not a big complexity. Just big booziness. Tastes rather like an unnuanced maibock. Some more spice characters, either straight-up or by-products from the Belgian yeast would really make this sing.
