12 oz bottle into a tulip. has a spot on the label for freshness dating but no date to be found.

pours a rich, hazy copper color with virtually no head or lacing.

smell is toasty and carmelly with a lot of fruit. picking up some raisin, fig and maybe a little apple. taste is nowhere near as good as the nose. some toasty malts upfront and hop bitterness in back, but not much else. alcohol content is hidden pretty well.

medium body but not much co2, probably why there's not much head.

pretty drinkable, but kinda disappointing flavor wise. definitely not an american pale, but doesn't really make me think of a barleywine either. worth a try if you can find it, but i probably won't pick this up again.

on a side note - i suspect that the recipes (or an ingredient at least) have changed recently at motor city brewery. been drinking their beer for years and am usually impressed, but everything i've had recently seems to be subpar. i'll have to investigate this.

Poured from a 12oz glass into two white wine glasses. Thanks to HeatherAnn for the assist!

A: Medium brown with reddish tint. Tiny off-white head that left a minimum of lace.

S: Mild (and I mean mild!) aromas of lightly toasted malt and a little sour grain.

T: Toasted malt and slightly spicy hops. Tart grain and not much hops. Meh

M: Dry malty graininess. That's about it.

D: Not too impressed.

12 oz bottle. i like the catchy name, like oil.

Poured almost the nut brown color of a brown ale, darker than i expected for a pale ale, even a double pale. Not alot of head, just a ring and some floaties. not much lacing if any

Smell was mild with a slight floral hop nose and slight toasted malt, but mild nose for a double style beer.

Taste followed smell. Up front was slightly bitter (not knock your socks off bitter, or even close to that) hop flavor that only lasted for a couple of seconds and then was followed by some toasted malt which then faded to nothingness.

Mouthfeel was watery, which is why the drinkability is so high, it would be easy to suck down these if they were really cold and it was a hot day and i just mowed the lawn, but im relaxin i want something more.

I had this on draft at Motor City, served in a standard pint.

First off, this isn't an APA, it's listed as a Barleywine by MCBW themselves. Just as an FYI.

A: Murky brownish apricot, really not the most appetizing color in the world. No head, low carbonation evident.

S: Mild, sweet malts and the barest hint of a candy orange.

T: Good balance for sure, probably too fresh because the malts have a somewhat fresh taste and the hops are still noticeable with some zippiness on the tongue. It's just OK. Like most beers from mediocre small brewpubs it tastes overly fresh.

M: Mouthfeel is good, big, thick, nice for the style.

D: Eh, I wouldn't even bother having it again, or really go back to Motor City based on what my fiancee and I had there. What does that say about my opinion of it?
