I tried this a long time ago as one of my first alts, and I really loved it then. However, now that I've had a few others, this turns out to be a pretty decent but not spectacular alt. Smooth and drinkable but nothing very noteworthy. Caramel flavors and slightly bitter hops.

Poured from 12oz bottle.

A- Pours a darker brownish amber color. One finger beige head shows medium retention and finally leaves whisps of foam on the top of the beer. Light web style lacing on the sides of the glass.

S- This is pretty balanced for what I thought I was expecting. Caramel malts with light toffee hints toward the front of the aroma. Nutty aroma towards the middle with some mild citrus hops in the ending.

T- Front of the beer showcases the malt body profile. Caramel malts with hints of toffee malt come through on a muted flavor. Some light nutty flavors come through in the middle with some ending muted citrus hops in the ending.

M- Medium mouthfeel. Carbonation was a little light but it didn't ruin the beer. Carmael malts and toffee malts left on the palate. Aftertaste is light alcohol, caramel malts, and a strange overly stale nutty flavor. Flavors were muted but well balanced. No off flavors could be detected. Medium drying on the palate from alcohol.

D- This beer is alright. The ABV is low enough for this to be a multiple bottle drinker. The overall flavors were muted which I could have done without. Another beer from Land Beer which makes Japan look like it has hope in its vast beer wasteland.

Bottle with an expiration date in June.
Drinking this in Japan, purchased in Okazaki, so it hasn't had to travel far.

Impressive color, a really nice caramel. Smell is definitely sweet, with some caramel notes. Taste took me a little off guard- I'm not very familiar with the alt style, and most beer in Japan uses as little malt as possible to avoid higher tax brackets- this is malty! I only taste the hops afterwards, otherwise it's a semi-sweet malt, malt, malt. I'm more of an IPA guy, so it tastes a little funny to me.

Mouthfeel is a bit above average- you can tell it isn't water.

Since I'm not crazy about the malty sweetness, I probably wouldn't have more than a couple of these at a time (and it was pretty expensive which certainly wouldn't help).

I'll be curious to see how it is on tap whenever I make it over to Beer Circus.

Thanks to egajdzis for this...
Appears an opaque light amber with a small off white head that slowly fades out. Streaks of lace are left around the glass.
Smell is of caramel, toffee, nuts, and mild earthy, citrus hop notes.
Taste is of the aromas with a weird yeasty offness that I can't really put my finger on.
Mouthfeel is smooth, sweet, medium bodied, bitter, with a mild syrup stickiness and a metallic tang.

this is one of my few local breweries, and i gotta represent. i've been putting this review off for a while, in fact i haven't even tried this beer yet. mainly because i'm not a big fan of this style. but i have been happy with the other offerings of this brewery. so here it goes.

pours out a nice looking dark ruby, tea brown. impressive head retention, a thick beige layer never goes away. for a japanese beer, this is one awesome brew for appearance. smell is quite subtle. managebly malty, not intensely aromatic but the more i smell it, the more i realize it has a really good balance. in fact, this has a great smell well worth contemplating. complex enough to make it interesting.

the taste is bitter enough. like i got from the smell, this is just enough to be interesting, to differentiate itself from the rest. this is worth a try if you are in nagoya and want a good altbier. otherwise i would recommend the other offerings by this brewery before this one.
