A perfect companion in the dark winter, Esrum Vinterbock is a bottom-fermented bock with a distinct malt character and a long aging time, giving it lots of aroma and character. It is brewed according to German tradition by boiling part of the malt, resulting in a soft and rounded malt flavor with a hint of caramel.

Esrum Vinterbock is the perfect companion for Christmas Eve, Easter sandwiches or for a cozy moment in the dark winter. The best brewers of the Middle Ages were found in the monasteries, where it was a sacred duty to produce the best of our Lord's raw materials. We have been apprenticed to the learned monks and have tried to refine this classic monastery beer type to perfection.

Copenhagen 21/3 2020. 50 cl bottle from Meny, Østerfælled Torv, Kbh. Ø. The version I am drinking has a ABV of 6,4. Dark blue and black label with snow crystals.

Pours clear dark maroon with a medium-sized white head. Settles as thin, almost transparent layer of foam just covering the surface of the beer. Crawling up the sides of the glass. Substantial lacing.

Aroma is moderately intense, caramel sweet with notes of alcohol. Caramel, burnt brown sugar and a rather strong presence of alcohol when I take the modest ABV into account.

Light carbonation. Slightly thick, oily, lightly tingling texture.

Flavor is medium intense. Medium sweetness followed by a moderately strong bitterness. Aftertaste is sweet with a light sourish undercurrent. Lingers for a bit. Sweet finish.

Could use a little more intensity in both nose and flavor. A winter-warmer that will only keep you lukewarm.
