BREWERS BEWARE!! I first went here to start homebrewing, over the phone the owner seemed to genuinely care about customer satisfaction as he was helpful and gave plenty of advice. Well....I went back for my second brew supplies and he was very short and rude as if he was having a very bad day so I purchased the ingredients and went about my business. So I went back today for ingredients for my third brew. Evan was short and absolutely disrespectful again but this time I asked to sample one of his IPAs with Spruce and he looked me straight in the eye and said "NO!, I didn't have time for that". To my surprise he grabbed a glass and poured him one instead! The guy behind the counter is very kind and helpful and felt bad but I won't give this guy any of my money ever even if my love for beer depended on it. No thanks, you guys should do yourself a favor and find a nicer place to buy your supplies.

A great homebrew store. Evan is extremely helpful and patient. He's always taken the time to answer any questions, and make suggestions if I need them. Also very knowledgable, and able to recommend different grains and hops. I've bought equipment and ingredients here and have always been pleased. Glad that we have a good local homebrew shop in Athens. Definitely worth a visit - whether it's a new hobby and you need some help, or an experienced brewer looking for supplies.

I love Five Points Bottle Shop and Five Points Growlers. When you are buying beer or wine, they have knowledgable staff and usually offer great recommendations. At the growler store you can buy homebrew supplies now as well. It is okay, but you won't get the same service and attention there as you will at Blockader. It has also been my experience that Evan is far more knowledgable than any of the guys I've talked to in the Five Points Growler store. Athens is big enough to support a couple of homebrew supply stores, I think, and Five Points growlers might work in a pinch, but Blockader provides better service and expertise.

As far as I'm concerned, this is the only homebrew store in Athens. The location is convenient, the selection is wide, and Evan's expertise and advice all make Blockader the only sensible choice. He helped me get started into the greatest of all hobbies and has been more than willing to help me along, every step of the way.

What really makes this place special is the customer service. It's like having your own Charlie Papazian telling you the pros and cons of particular ingredients, products, and techniques. The store's selection runs the gamut from the inquisitive beginner, to the expert. And Evan is honest. If he doesn't have a product, he tells you where you can find it for the best price. He understands that we homebrewers are usually a frugal lot.

Bottom line: Don't waste your time at Five Points Homebrew. The selection and expertise at Blockader is everything you could want in a LHBS.

Stopped by this place for the first time today to pick up a homebrewing kit and some supplies for my dad for father's day.

It's kind of a dinky little hole in the wall with no ac, but you can't beat the service. Evan spent an hour with me explaining what was in my kit, formulating a belgian abbey for me to make with my dad and handpicking each ingredient with me while giving me information and trivia about each type of malt, hops, yeast, etc.

He's REALLY knowledgeable and a pretty funny guy. It was definitely a good experience. And I ran into my spanish professor.

Ive been homebrewing for around 3 years now and just recently found Blockader. At first glance the place is not very inviting, but once I was inside it wasn't as bad as I thought. The selection is very good and has a little bit for everyone. They keep basically any grain you could want in stock and have freezers full of hops and yeast. The guy who runs the place can be very helpful. He may come off as a little arrogant at first, but he is very knowledgeable. I have seen him spend 30 minutes just explaining how to brew to people who have bought nothing. Overall this is a great store, but with 5 points opening a supply store this one may lose out a little.

Just started home brewing, but visited this store often before I started. The guy who runs it is very nice and knowledgeable. He helped me with my kegerator setup and explained it very carefully even though I wasn't there to buy stuff. He is always very helpful. When I finally come for my 1st ingredients, he actually made me a recipe for something I wanted to make instead of using a random one off the internet. He also hooked me up with detailed instructions on steps and procedures on brewing, as well as kegging.

They have a great selection of hops and can order most things if they are out. Not always stocked up on extracts, but I wouldn't either. He always will order it for you though. Nice big store, good location, somewhat hard to get into sometimes because the street is to busy.

Overall, It;s great to have a homebrew shop in Athens and I really appreciate this shop's knowledge and generosity.

Updated for new location (original below the ***)

The new location is easier to find, as it now on a more major road and more easily visable from the street.

Orginization has improved vastly, with grain in one neat area. All other equipment is laid out around the store in a much more accessable manner as well (a vast improvment from having to ask for help to find most things at the old store).

In addition, this store is much more attractive than the old one; it looks cleaner and newer and would be less intimidatiing for a first time homebrewer to walk into.

Service and selection continue to maintain at a high level.

I have been to this homebrew shop twice now and so far they haven't disappointed me. It is a bit disorganized and I couldn't find anything without asking where it was, but apparently they are moving to a new location soon so I can excuse the mess.

The service was good and so far the only thing I have asked for that they didn't have was pale chocolate malt (which is admittedly somewhat obscure). Their prices are pretty much in line with what I have seen elsewhere.

In addition to brewing supplies they had several stills on display (perhaps not too surprising considering that Athens is in the heart of rural Georgia). I was also impressed to see that there were a couple of converted kegs and a very nice, stainless steel plate filter with sanitary fittings.
