Coloni has a great selection of beers in an area that is surrounded by wineries. Excellent menu with good quality, tasty food. For those with kids, a fantastic playground makes a great excuse for a visit!

Special mention for being the first place I've ever seen growlers in Australia.

This place has really good facilities for the kids with a massive grassed area complete with playground. The beer is pricey considering it's brewed onsite at 12 dollars for a pint I think its a bit over the top. The food is better than average, with the prawn pizza and spicey chicken wings being the pick. Overall its a family friendly place with very good beer.

a- the venue is top notch when its busy, and looks good at any time.

q-varies drastically, i used to work at the royal (owned by colonial) and the batch variation was always a problem. sometimes the beers were spot on and others they were nothing like they should be. being a small brewery the expansions they're undergoing mean expediting work to other breweries (gage roads) and the quality fluctuates monstrously. when the beers are good though, they can be exceptionally good. big fan of the kolsch and ipa (around 2008-9 era)

s- service is usually good, although with a small kitchen and warm summers you can expect the waits on food to get pretty long. bar staff know a good deal about beer most of the time.

selection-not huge in terms of beer, small company so they need to use their tanks to make as much as possible, so few varietals.

f-always good quality if not overpriced

v-typical perth prices sadly, largely mirrors other competitors prices.

overall, one of the best breweries in w.a with big plans for expansion. one to watch.

A = Great atmosphere! Nice beer shed with good live music. The shed leads to the outside where there is a beer garden. Classic beer pub styles!

Q = The quality of beer choice is good. Unfortunately the beer is good and not great. Its a bit of a let down. Solid just not amazing.

S = Good service. What the staff didnt know about beer they went and asked. To make it great, I guess I expect the staff to be knowledgable about beer.

F = Food was good. Not great. But a little expensive.

V = A bit pricey. But their growler deal is value for money. 2L for 20 bucks is pretty sweet!

Atmosphere - 4.0
Depends on how busy it is. Last time I was there, there was a busy crowd and live music, and the atmosphere was good. The previous time it was quieter, and it felt a bit too "restauranty" to want to stay for too long.

Quality - 4.5
Everything from what is on sale, to what is written on the toilet doors is focussed on celebrating beer.

Service - 4.5
Bar staff were friendly and well informed about the beers.

Selection - 4.5
Much improved from my last visit, where there was something of a predominance of dark beers. Now they have a Kolsch, Witbier, EPA, Porter, American IPA and a mid-strength Amber Ale. Would be good to see the Hefe make a return.

Food - Didn't try
Looked to be good and well priced, I must stay for lunch some time.

Value - $$$ - a bit pricey
I only refer to the lower ABV beers as being pricey, at $9 for 500mL. I don't mind paying this much for a 6.3%ABV porter, but for the lower ABV beers it is a bit much, especially considering 570mL of Rogers is $7 at Little Creatures. Good to see that there is no penalty on buying 250mL beers, as they are all exactly half the price of the 500mL servings.

Overall an excellent beer venue, each time I have been there it has not been for long enough.

Colonial was the first microbrewery I visited on a short trip down south in May. Its easy to get to and not far from the Margaret River town at all. We arrived on a quiet, lazy autumn Wednesday afternoon. Indoor and outdoor areas look out across the neighbouring paddocks.

We met brewer Dean (BA Dig) who kindly gave up his time to walk and talk us through the brewery all the while offering samples of his ales. As such, we couldn't be happier with the service. First up was the favourite American style IPA straight from the tank. This beer has evolved from the English style strong ale incarnation I had previously tried. Strong, hoppy, bitter and highly recommended. Then we moved through the kolsch, bitter, brown ale and porter. Highlights for me being the brown ale and porter. I believe all or most of the beers have been modified (improved) since my reviews from mid 2006.

We were told that Colonial are having to do all their brewing in Perth while waiting for a new brew kettle to arrive. So it was a great effort that all the beers were available. The beers should only improve further with their own brewery back up and running.

It seems there is good reason for the hype about Colonial. I liked what I heard about the brewing approach and choices of beer styles and ingredients. I'm looking forward to the Fremantle Colonial opening hopefully in the not too far future.
