Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
The only “effortless” thing about this beer is how it drinks. Domestic and imported malts take a backseat to the loads of American grown hops that are dumped into the kettle. Dry-hopped for a mouthwatering aroma with Mosaic and Palisade hops. Enjoy an Effortless drinking experience with our Session IPA.

Decanted from a 12 oz (355 ml) bottle into a conical pint glass; bottled 07/28/2017.
A: Pours a hazy, dark amber color with a one half inch head, low retention, and low to moderate lacing.
S: Aromas of toast, lemon and pine predominate.
T: Tastes akin to nose, although grapefruit more evident than lemon. Maltiness evident up front with more bitterness on the back end. Slight bitter aftertaste.
M: Medium bodied with strong carbonation.
O: A very drinkable and enjoyable American IPA. Better balance that Hop Commander. Looks and tastes more like the New England IPA cluster within the style. Would not hesitate to have it again.

Willi becher pint glass.
Pours hazy amber, little white head that flattens out quickly. Smells of mild pine, mild malts and GF/citrus. Tastes of GF up front with a nice base that follows of pine and mild malts. Thin, biittered.. with a heavy dose of carbonation.. which actually fits well for a session IPA. No lingering bitterness to ruin the party.
This is my 1st beer from CL, and I'm quite pleased with the overall approach to this session. It's not overly bitter.. at least not to me.

The beer pours out into a shaker pint glass a hazy dark golden amber color with a 1" high off white head that slowly but visibly recedes to leave some lacing on the sides of the glass. Sipping creates several patches and legs of lacing and for most of the beer there are some patches of lacing on the sides of the glass.

The aromas are dominated by the hops which are pine, some citrus and a touch of resin.

The flavors are much as expected from the nose. There's really no malt sweetness here to moderate the bitterness.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied and slightly prickly with the moderate carbonation. The finish begins as the hop flavors and bitterness fade slowly into the background but I'm still not finding much if any malt here.

Overall this seems a well made expression of the Session IPA which also illustrates again for me why I usually prefer not to drink them, i.e., they are all about the hops and bitterness. I gave it a try but won't be repeating it.

12 ounce can poured into a tulip glass. Lovely label on the can too!

Look: Deep orange copper and honey, with two fingers of head on the pour.

Smell: Grapefruit of course is a strong presence, with notes of pine needles present as well

Taste: Grapefruit, and plenty of it too! Minor notes of pine needles and honey are detectable, along with a bit of closing hops bitterness. It's very tangy and refreshing, and mild, as befits a session IPA. There is a slightly too sweet aftertaste, but it's not overpowering and goes away with a sip or two of water.

Feel: The citrus, along with the carbonation, tickles the palate nicely. It's soft and smooth, the sort of beer I'd want on a hot day.

Overall: Just about everything I'd want in a session IPA. I'm already quite fond of this one, and I'll definitely pick up more. It's a light, satisfying IPA, just like it says on the can.

Pours an amber color with an orange hue to it and a small white head. The smell is strong on floral tones with subtle citrus hints. The flavor is your typical session, perhaps a little heavier in feel though. Overall, a pretty good session.

Brief impressions from a bottle:

Pungent oily hop bitterness is accompanied by scraping dryness and grapefruit pith. Too bitter even at 45 IBUs, Effortless IPA is anything but effortless to drink if only out of imbalance. Drinks boozier than it tastes; I'd figure this for 7% ABV in a blind tasting. Sharply overcarbonated, unrefreshing, and smooth.

A miss for me from Captain Lawrence, but fans of the Stone/Green Flash camp of wildly imbalanced IPAs will likely flock to this in droves. Not a beer that would be first on my list to revisit, but it's approachable enough and I'll enjoy it for what it is.

12oz bottle into a pint glass. bottled 8/26/16, so about 5 weeks old.

hazy orange amber body. small white head which dissipates leaving average lacing. little carbonation.

very nice grapefruit citrus aroma, picking up the malt as well.

flavor as the nose detects. good strong citrus, solid malt background.

Medium on the mouth, slightly bitter on the finish.

Overall, one of the tastier session ipas I've had.

CAPTAIN LAWRENCE EFFORTLESS IPA 8/26/16

Bought on sale, apparently because the bottled on date was 5/6/16, so three and a half months old. I usually find IPAs past the one month mark are still enjoyable, although a caveat applies to this review.

Poured from the 12 oz. bottle into a Lawson's stemmed tulip.

a: Translucent amber with a finger thick white head which receded slowly to eve3n surface foam and

s: Citrus and pine resin.

t: Follows the nose with a moderate hop bite over a medium bready malt base. Bitterness lingers slightly on the dry finish.

m; Light to medium, good body and carbonation tingle.

o: A better than average session IPA with a solid hop bite and a good amount of flavor, for its age. Refreshing and easy drinking.

L - White carbonated head. Moderate amber hue and very little lacing throughout.
S - Nice hoppy smell right out of the bottle which keeps all the way through. Citrus smell, faded grapefruit perhaps.
T - A mini hop bomb of sorts, but not overpowering. Left an aftertaste on roof of mouth.
F - Slight carbonation with a slightly sticky feel to it.
O - A pleasant surprise. A fairly easy drinker worth getting again.
