Thanks to cfh64 for sending this bottle as part of the 2017 NCAA Football Pick 'Em BIF! Thanks man. Reviewed from (long-standing) notes. Poured from a 12.7 oz. squat bottle into an El Catador Barrel Aged glass.

A: Brassy gold in color with hints of orangish pink, and moderately hazy. Lots of visible carbonation, but only a half-finger of white head forms, and even that fades away pretty quickly.

S: Lactic and malic acid, sour cherries and some funk. Some white vinous grape, white oak sweetness, and tannic dryness. Cracker malt body and some tart lemony citric acid as well. Nice, but not a huge aroma.

T: Lactic acid tartness with some malic sour cherries again. Tart lemon rind citric acid, some oaky dryness, and cracker malts. A modest Brettanomyces and maybe Lactobacillus funk – basement and old barn wood. Then the vinous, dry grapey kick near the swallow, with lingering tart citric and lactic acids.

M: A fairly light body, but not watery. A good amount of small bubble carbonation sensation, without seeming over-carbonateded. Minimal alcohol presence.

O: Solid and no overt flaws, but I think forgettable. Just nothing about it to jump out at you. I’d not seek it out again, but certainly wouldn’t turn down a pour.

i am really pleased to be seeing a lot of captain lawrence draft around colorado lately, and while it might still be leftovers from gabf, its awesome to have it here! this is a cool one, a wild sour aged in oak with cabernet grapes. i didnt think new york state was known for its red varietals, excited to see what these grapes contribute! the beer pours a little still from the tap unfortunately, a thin ring of lazy bubbles around the outside edge of the wine glass, but no substantial head at all. a murky orange red color, again not particularly appealing visually, but the aroma is great. an immediate sting to the nostrils of sourness, bacterial but also woody and mature, piquant and acidic with slight vinegar and citrus to it. the wood is there too, lots of it, sweet and winey. the flavor is right there with the nose, maybe a little less grape than i smelled, and thats the part i was most looking forward to, its tart and acidic enough to reduce some of the fruitiness i think, but the flavor is great, heaps of red wine tannins and wood, lemon zest, and floral funkiness, bretty and weird, but more acidic than farmy, more grapes through the finish would be a great touch, but i really do like the flavor of this beer. furthermore, it absolutely needs more bubbles, this is near still, and it just doesnt fit the flavors for me, a real missing element overall. still, this is unique and delicious beer that feels a little thin, it doesnt drink like over 8% abv at all. a smart and fun beer from these guys, who have been a little hit or miss for me on the wild stuff, and while this isnt perfect, its real tasty!

On tap at the Tip Tap Room, served in something kind of like a tulip, pours a clear orange cranberry...no head and no lacing. Nose is earthy, faintly juicy and a little sour/funky, but not the funk is pretty underdeveloped. Taste is better...with more juicy earthy notes that are only modestly sour, 3/4 of the way through—fruit is kind of like cranberry, elderberry, maybe a little half ripened plum. Not all that layered; all the notes are pretty much up front and you get them right away. Comes to a nice point at the end, with a little lively carb and a slight pucker. Would never guess the abv...completely hidden. All in all, nicely done and fairly interesting. Worth a shot.
