Reviewed from notes taken February 2015:
This is Captain Lawrence's winter The Ginger Man seasonal (a coffee milk stout) conditioned with dark cocoa and toasted coconut. Not to be confused with another version made with blood orange and tangelo zest & juice.
Cost was $7 per 13 oz pour at The Ginger Man, New York, NY.
Served on-draught into stemware.
HEAD: None. No lacing.
BODY: Opaque jet black. True to style.
Looks standard for a milk stout. No flourishes, no flaws.
AROMA: Magnificent expressive coconut. Dark malts and concomitant sweetness, lactose sugar, cocoa, and chocolate malts lend it heavy sweetness. There's some mocha, but no real coffee presence or roasted barley bitterness.
Whoppers/malted milk balls.
A pleasant albeit sweet aroma of moderate intensity. Fortunately, no overt yeast, off-notes, or alcohol are detectable in the aroma.
TASTE: Coconut sets it off nicely, but where's the coffee character? Has a style-appropriate heavy sweetness from lactose sugar and cocoa, filled out by dark malts and chocolate malts. Some might even find this cloyingly sweet (i.e. far sweeter even than traditional style conventions), and java or roasted barley would help correct the flawed balance with needed bitterness.
No overt hoppy notes, alcohol, or off-flavours come through.
Average depth, duration, and intensity of flavour.
I do like it for what it is. More complex than many milk stouts out there. The coconut in particular stands out.
TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, full-bodied, and rather thick, with a viscous almost syrupy weight on the palate. Well-carbonated.
Overall presence on the palate is nice, though its heavy feel does restrain its drinkability. Certainly not refreshing (to style).
OVERALL: Rather drinkable, but far from a session beer. The execution doesn't live up to the premise, and there's no coffee at all contrary to its billing, but the coconut and dark cacao nib notes alone make this well worth trying. All of its problems seem to lie with the base beer.
