Reviewed from notes taken February 2015.

Served on-draught into a tulip at The Ginger Man, New York, NY.

4.5% ABV.

HEAD: 1 finger worth of head. White in colour. Foamy, frothy, creamy, full, thick, soft-looking, and boasting an even consistency. Retention is great (~7 minutes). Leaves a nice coating of lacing as it recedes.

BODY: Clear translucent yellow body colour. It's that classic pilsner colour. Clean, lacking any visible yeast/lees or sediment. Obviously filtered (true to the style). Average vibrance.

Appears well-carbonated. Far from unique or special looking for a pilsner, but generally appealing.

AROMA: Surprisingly hop-forward for a pilsner, with plenty of overt floral and fruity aromatics. Pale malts, pilsner malts. Brief hints of mango.

Fragrant and intense for a pilsner (which is to say its aromatic intensity is still mild overall). Departs from the usual Noble hop grassiness and crisp fresh pilsner malt aroma one would find in a great traditional expression of the style.

I detect no overt yeasty notes, off-notes, or alcohol.

TASTE: Pilsner malts, blonde/helles malts, grassy hops, vaguely fruity hop flavours, faint yeasty spice (maybe some clove?). No overt alcohol or off-flavours are present.

It's balanced, if hoppy by traditional conventions. Unfortunately, though, it's quite shallow. Boasts above average complexity for a pilsner.

Average flavour duration and intensity.

I do like it, and it's highly approachable as well as refreshing. Still, it leaves much to be desired and the American emphasis on hops doesn't translate into a more satisfying expression of the style.

TEXTURE: Crisp, overcarbonated, smooth, dry, light-bodied, refreshing, and of adequate (i.e. mild) heft on the palate.

Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, rough, or scratchy.

Doesn't elevate the beer as a whole. The dryness is odd, but I think it works.

OVERALL: A drinkable and enjoyable pilsner with some daring hop choices that are anything but traditional. While I like it, I do prefer more balanced traditional expressions of the style and the hop emphasis here seems lazy rather than inspired or ambitious. Well worth trying for what it is in spite of its priciness. One of the more inspired and dialed down brews I've had from Captain Lawrence, but more restraint and stricter adherence to tradition would only help.
