Brewed with Carvel signature chocolate crunchies, fudge and ice cream, along with milk sugar, this beer is a treat. Fudgie the Beer has smooth creamy cocoa notes with a roasted crunchies finish.

Dark brown color. Thin, cola-like head. Milk chocolate, toasted malt, and vanilla cream in the aroma. The same notes follow into a moderately sweet taste with roasted bitterness at the end.

Pours dark. Thin foam. Chocolate aroma. Dark roasted malt body. Chocolate flavor but not too sweet. Not bad but nothing special here.

16 ounce can - $6.49 at Total Wine & More in Kennesaw, Georgia.

Appearance: Pours a near black body, though no real head formation to speak of.

Smell: Decidedly vacant aroma beyond a far-off, teensy, oddly smelling hint of something a bit fetid, foul lurking there. Good lord.

Taste: Jeepers! Oddly harsh, altogether unpleasant flavor that seems like a sourish low-grade powder unethically labelled as 'chocolate' plus a chemically shot of something you'd use as embalming fluid.

Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Minimal carbonation.

Overall: Irredeemably horrendous and an absolutely rip-off. It's bewildering to picture the production team with wide smiles and congratulatory handshakes after this horrid thing was entombed within a sixteen ounce can.

From the bottom of the can: "CANNED 06102021 101946 MPN 1755 FUDGIE THE BEER !"

Appearance: It is black bodied with a light khaki head. The head is medium-large and both frothy and cobwebbed. It fades quickly to a thin layer of large bubbles across the surface.

Aroma: There is a faint burnt aroma and a bit of cola.

Taste: Up front it tastes like heavily toasted grains with a light bit of charred wood. Towards the middle of the mouth there is a little bit of caramel character but otherwise there is very little transformation.

Mouthfeel: It feels medium-light bodied and somewhat thin.

Overall: The label on the can states that this is a "LIMITED EDITION" and that it is "A DARK, ROASTY & FUDGIE COLLABERATION WITH CARVEL." Perhaps it was an oversell on the name and the overuse of "FUDGIE" but the beer didn't have any chocolate at all, even from the malt. There is another part of the label that states "UTILIZING CARVELĀ® SIGNATURE CHOCOLATE CRUNCHIES, FUDGE & ICE CREAM." It has a nice roasty character with some caramel malt flavors but there is nothing else. The beer is phoned in. If anything, the brewers ate a bunch of Carvel cakes and made a lackluster beer. It's barely average. I don't recommend it and I wouldn't buy it again.

Remember Tom Carvel? I do and those commercials with that gravely-voiced founder of the Ice Cream company that bears his name was a mainstay on television when I was growing up. To top it off, one of their restaurants was in my town here in New Jersey as it still operates to this day. Of course, when I saw this for sale I had to get a can and thankfully, it was available a few weeks back up at Cable Beverage in New York.

Unfortunately, this was *not* the dessert beer that I was hoping for. If you love their cakes, minus the extra toppings and frosting, then this would be for you. One-dimensional, gimmicky, and a bit too easy to quaff, this was fine for the end of yet another muggy, rainy summer day although I was hoping for more throughout my time with this.

No surprise that this poured dark, as the mocha head was quite bubbly at the top and receded quickly. No lacing was left behind aside form a few spots along the bottom half of my pint glass. Cake batter, heavy chocolate, and a hint of fudge was in the nose as this reminded me of Guinness, as that was repeated in the taste as well. Bitter chocolate and cocoa entered the fray once this fully warmed up but for something like this, I wanted more life and sweetness in it. The carbonation was light and the body was present, although this a bit more roasted and burnt than I expected.

No date was found on this as I expected more from something that was part Stout, part Scotch Ale, and part Porter. Sticky on my lips, this felt much stronger than it was in actuality which only confused me more. If anyone from Captain Lawrence is listening - give Cookie Puss a go and make up for this beer that was fell short of the cake that it alluded to.

A thanks to the creator of the canquest, woodychandler, for this beer. Poured from a 16 oz. can. Has a black color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is mild, hints of chocolate. Taste is chocolate, roasted malts, some coffee. Feels medium/full bodied in the mouth and overall is a decent beer.

Not quite the dessert beer I was hoping for, but still solid enough...

When a brewer advertises they are collaborating with Carvel, I am all ears. I was hoping for a nice dessert beer to end one of my evenings, after dinner, but this frankly fell short. It wasn't bad, mind you, it just wasn't the kind of dessert beer I am used too. Normally, i find dessert beers to be very sweet and creamy and well, delicious. This however, though full-bodied and solid, just didn't live up to the billing I was expecting. Is it bad? No. I encourage others to try it. But is it a dessert beer? Not in my book.
