This brewer is dear to my heart, and has produced some of my favourite session brews. Sadly this will not be one of them, not only because its a one-off, but also because its not a particularly good one-off. Ah, Magnotta, why do you disappoint me so?

A golden pour kicks up a small white head, which exhibits limited retention due to the low natural carbonation of the cask. No lacing is left behind, but I'm okay with that - I drink cask beer for the wonderful effect it has on the body, not for the appearance of the beer. The aroma is sweet and straightforward. Raspberry, peach, brown sugar, honey and flowers. The hopping doesn't seems as high as it should be in the nose, but I'm presuming that it is contributing the floral element. Frankly, this tastes a little of extract. There's a lot of sweet malt, berries and caramel, but very little else. It all seems really simple, and lacks the complexity of their bottled offerings. My main gripe, though, is that this is supposed to be a best bitter, but the buses only give the briefest of kisses to the malt body. Talking of which, this is lighter and less complex in mouthfeel than I look for in a cask, and this helps contribute to an all-round disappointing experience.

This is a puzzling offering from an otherwise reliable brewery. Certainly not to style, and without any complexity. While its drinkable, the sweetness makes it a slower and less pleasurable experience than you would want. Ho-hum. If you want to try this brewery at their best, hunt down their IPA or altbier, but give this one a miss.

Pint on cask at Volo, part of their pre-cask days line-up.

Light golden color with a finger of head that leaves lacing down the glass. Not your typical bitter coloring.

Light sugary sweet notes in the nose, hints of honey... not much else. This is odd.

Taste is... so off it's sad. Slightly herbal, honeysuckle meets lavender, plus they threw in the vines so there's this odd vegetal note in the back, almost cauliflower. Sweet sweet body, honey-like. Uhhh, this isn't a bitter, though there is a hint of bitterness in the finish. Not sure what you would call this but I sure wouldn't call this drinkable, struggled to get my pint down.

Volo English cask fest, special cask at 25 IBU. Very fresh, medium golden colour body with spider lace. Taste is a bit peculiar and funky, there was a bit of orangeade going on, but most drinkable, with above average mouthfeel. A mild bitterness. Magnotta does cask just fine.
