The Rare Bird is an impressive waterfront
structure with a gorgeous 40-seat patio overlooking
Chedabucto Bay. The building is a heritage
building; completed in 1928, it is a
replica of the original that was destroyed by fire.
Inside, it's no less impressive; a spacious room with seating for 180! A large square bar and modern, shiny, copper brewery await you. In addition a live-music stage gets action during the busy summer months.
The beer selection was a choice of three brew. While I would consider this not impressed, or worse, I have consider where this place is and what they are trying to do with the place! The choices during our visit were the Hummingbird Light, Rare Bird pale ale, and Blonde Ale. While none of them wowed us all three were solid and nothing tasted off. The place is rather remote so understand that they are not making beer to satisfy beer geeks, they are making it for thirsty tourists looking for a light and quenching brew!
The menu ranged from local seafare to sandwiches, pub fare and wood fired pizza. For dinner I choose the Atlantic Fish Cakes, a local delicacy and for dessert the decadent Bread and Butter Pudding! All of the food was fresh, well presented and tasty!
The Rare Bird is seasonal, open from mid-May to mid-October. So if your travels take you to eastern Nova Scotia make sure not to miss this gem. The brew may not knock your socks off but the food and location surely will!
