Laughing Dog Brewing "219 Premium Pilsner"
12 fl. oz. can without production codes or freshness dating
$2.29 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: It's poured a clear golden body beneath a creamy cap of bright white foam. The aroma is sweetish, and oddly not malty. It's candyish, and subtly fruity. I wonder if this is an adjunct lager? It certainly seems to be; there are no hops. Odd. I wouldn't have thought you'd call it a pilsner without some hops in the aroma, but OK. On to the flavor... uggghhh, that sweetish aroma is exactly what it tastes like. The malty is a little bready, but not grainy, and certainly not anything like pilsner malt. The fruitiness remains as well, which is weird. Is this even brewed with lager yeast? It doesn't seem like it. The fruitiness reminds me a little of a raspberry PEZ candy. As in the aroma, there are no real hop flavors (there is a very mild minty-herbal thing going on in the background), and again, I can't see why they've chosen to call this a pilsner rather than a lager, or whatever. A limited amount of bitterness is present and it finishes mostly dry with some residual sweet malt fading; it's not cloying though. It's medium bodied and gently crisp. The head has dropped by now to an average collar, and there's no lacing left behind. As a pilsner this is a complete failure, and even just as a regular beer for everyday drinking it falters as it's not properly balanced.

Pours a clear golden yellow with medium head and mild lacing.
Smell is mildly sweet, light corn, and a whiff of sour apple.
Taste is grassy. Some corn and apple flavor comes through.
Sweet front end with a slightly bitter finish.

Poured into a pilsener glass, the appearance was a burnt yellow color with a finger’s worth of quickly dieing foamy white head. Not much lace, but what was there slid off into the beer fairly quick. The aroma had some sweet grassy to light spicy sort of hoppiness going on in the front with a subtle clean floral hop coming in at the back. Some sweet biscuits. The flavor brought the hops cleanly into the malts in a nice sweet sort of way. Spiciness is low key, but seemed to punch just a pinch more in the aftertaste. Sly crisp little finish. The palate was between light and medium bodied with a pretty good sessionability about it. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt as projected. Overall, pretty nice pilsener that I wouldn’t mind having again.

I've been on a pilsner kick of late and these guys brew some fine beer so.

Not a whole lot new to add in terms of colour and smell that others haven't already touched on. To me it tastes a lot more like a slightly upscale version of MGD than anything close to what a pilsner should.

save some money and by some MGD lol

Laughing Dog calls this a "classic american pilsner," which I guess is the tactful way of saying "American adjunct lager," and their website even acknowledges the use of corn in the recipe.

Pours from a can a surprisingly hazy, cloudy gold, capped by three fingers of foam that recede quickly to nothing, leaving no real lacing but showing evidence of high carbonation.

Smell is classic AAL, but a bit cleaner. Slight apple, slight corn, slight citrus and bread. Faint grass, herbal. Taste is again, apple, corn, slight bread and slight hop bitterness. Slight earthiness, maybe a touch of nuttiness. Decent--if a touch heavy--body, and high carbonation.

A slightly "crafty" take on the American adjunct lager, this is actually decently likeable: a bit more polish than your Millers or Buds. I could see myself drinking this ever-so-occasionally if they could find a way to lower the price to compete with the big names.

Poured from 12oz can into a pint glass.

Appearance: light yellow hue with a little bit of haze and a moderately strong effervescence. Head is a thin layer of white foam without much staying power. Par for the course.

Smell: a lightly malty aroma with some grassiness and just a hint of sourness and farmhouse funk. I don't know if this was being brewed at the same time as a saison or something, but it's definitely got a hint of that in the character. Not stylistically appropriate, but not unwelcome either.

Taste: lightly sweet with a bit of malty character and a light but present hop character; if the hops are delivering this bizarre saison effect, then good choice. The sour/funk is much less pronounced in the flavor than the aroma. Though there is just a hint of plasticy aftertaste so common in the style, this is pretty decent for an adjunct lager.

Mouthfeel: medium-light body with a decent carbonation and creaminess.

Overall: this beer is far from perfect, but it rather tickles my fancy -- especially for an adjunct lager.

Can poured into a nonic pint glass. A pale golden yellow with some effervescent but short-lived white fizz on top. Aroma is moderately sweet malts and floral, grassy, faintly spicy hops ... Sourdough bread, weak lemon rind, grass clippings, a minty note. I agree with the style designation here although this is a tier above what one might expect based on this moniker alone. Sweetish cornbread, a peculiar minty flavor reminiscent of Double Bubble gum, white grapes, neutered lemon rind. Slightly thicker than your average mainstream lager, with an emergent sweetness cut just enough via grassy hops. Finishes fairly sweet, faintly floral and herbal. Unassuming, clearly intended to appeal to the average palate, non-offensive and largely forgettable. Decent session option.

I'm glad that JohnGalt (whoever he is) had the presence of mind to call this an American Adjunct Lager rather than a Pilsner. Sweet and grainy with a watered-down malt liquor sort of taste. Slight aroma of flowery hops and cereal.

Pours a perky light golden color with a decent white head in the Pilsner-style glass. There is plenty of prickly carbonation in the mouth. Light body but with a thickish, grainy mouthfeel. Some malty tang but mostly it's a cornbread flavor with a metallic aftertaste.

I can't see anything to recommend this. Even as a lawnmower beer it's cloying on the tongue rather than refreshing. But even in this category of horrors it doesn't offer much sunshine. From the 12 oz can purchased at Special Brews in Lynnwood, Washington.

Slightly chill hazed yellow fizzy beer with a small white colored head. Sort of looks like bud light in a glass.

Smells mildly sweet and mildly malty. Mildly lemon and saffron scented hops. Only thing is this isn't very aromatic at all takes a lot of effort to pick much out.

Starts out mildly malty with a mineral water taste. Mildly sweet and grassy. Mild hop bite. The taste of this one is pretty light though. Tastes like a light beer.

Mouthfeel is very light.

Overall got to tell the truth this is just too damn light. Doesn't taste bad and it certainly would be refreshing on a very hot day. But it is very close to water.
