Taster at Shade City Brewfest. Light amber pour with an off-white foamy head. Aroma and taste are toasty malts, mild sweetness and a gentle bitterness at the finish.

<edit 2/4/06: I think part of the problem with this beer was where I bought it. I've had a couple other beers from LD purchased in Spokane that were just fine. I think Gourmet Way has some storage issues that adversly affect the quality of the beers they sell. Next time I'll buy this from somewhere else. If need be, I'll wipe this review.>
12oz bottle I picked up at Gourmet Way in Coeur DAlene Idaho while fruitlessly looking for Hennepin. Part of LDs first bottling run.
Poured a dark transparent amber color, with a big sudsy off-white head that took its time to drop. Foam rings were left on the insides of the glass.
The nose is dominated by a caramelly sweetness and a buttery apple scent I assume is diacetyl. A very slight floral hoppiness is there, but it appears its not meant to be a hoppy amber, which is what I personally prefer.
This is a malty tasting amber, which is dominated by a caramel flavored sweetness. Theres also a bit of a diacetyl thing going on, which, when combined with the caramel, makes it taste like a weird caramel apple. This particular aspect became more cloying and nasty over time. At the finish is a faint dry hoppiness.
Medium bodied, about right for the style. Ho-hum.
This would be an ok session amber if not for the diacetyl hijacking things. Not bad for the very first bottling run, I suppose, but I dont think Ill be coming back to it anytime soon.
