Pitch black and opaque with a one finger beige head that slowly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Glass is left coated with sporadic streaks of splotchy lacing.

Somewhat bland aroma with a tame barrel presence that's more oak/dry wood then bourbon. Not very complex and lacking in usual vanilla/marshmallow/coconut. Some spicy, boozy bourbon but it's not very interesting . Roasted dark malt presence underneath with some coffee bean, bitter dark chocolate and oatmeal.

Thinner than expected with a strong charred oak presence that overpowers the bourbon and malt backbone. Barrel is slightly more complex than in the aroma with subtle toasted coconut and silky vanilla bean. Oak is really too strong for my preference and a bit burnt/acrid. Some chocolate malt sweetness underneath with dark fruit and coffee grinds. Disappointing.

December 17th, 2013 - 10/10 for the name already, and that's before I even get into the beer proper. It's a stout colored stout, with the by now familiar outfit of jet black liquid and a good inch of soy sauce colored head. The aroma is heavy with bourbon, spices appropriate for a thick steak, black pepper and a hint of licorice. It's an intense oatmeal stout, and far beyond the pale. Rate beer declares this an Imperial, but the branding said otherwise, but either way it goes, there's a ton of flavor and intensity here. The palate is shockingly light, though with a high dosage of carbonation, scrubbing the tongue off between sips. Lots of bright, cacao nib bits and pieces, with milk chocolate, and a long chocolate aftertaste. The alcohol is also pronounced but not dominant, yielding to the sweetness and sugar. Good, intense drinking from Boulder Beer, and another reason to come back imploring for more (should it ever make a return!)
